Someone told me this, but I can't find any official word of it online -- I'm just curious if anyone here knows.

    Thanks forum.

Doesn't surprise me. There is not a lot of tech involved. And Unity is pretty much the go to for any mobile game.

For mobile, you need a very good reason to consider using something other then Unity.

I downloaded it on iOS on day 2. No splash screen. So I guess they hit the 100k mark on day 1 and choose to upgrade. ;)

On a serious note there are Unity products included on the lisence page, so it is legit Unity.

That's about when I did, iOS as well. Don't see it everytime, only when I force quit and restart.

I'm actually a little surprised there haven't been requests for tutorials on how to make it yet. ;)

They were able to do it because they had a dark skin to relax their eyes during the hard times of game development. No Fair!

Just imagine how much more successful they would be if they got rid of the splash screen. ;)

It's coming. Maybe I should get started.

Odd. I get the garodous 'pay attention to your surroundings' splash screen.

Yup. Definite proof that bugs aren't that important if you have the right IP. Our local servers went down at 8am this morning. It was announced on the news on the radio when they came back up at 4pm.

So many distracted drivers on the roads this evening.

No kidding. Ingress was certainly popular with a select group, but GO quickly shifted from popular to phenomenon. It's really an impressive convergence of elements. Not only the right IP, but probably the only IP that could leverage it to that degree. It is fascinating to follow.

Status updates on the radio? Wow. Just wow. That is part of what is fascinating about it. When was the last time regular media reported much on games, no matter how popular? Around here, the food trucks are placing lures to boost business and one of the walmarts has become almost a mecca because they dropped so many lures.

We are pretty lucky at work. There were several hardcore ingress players here, and GO is using that data as a content base. There are two pokestops and a gym in my office. ;) (and it isn't a very big office)..

It's Pokemon, Nintendo's hand of Midas. Anything it touches turns to gold.

There was a year that Pokemon alone represented 1/6th of Japan's entire GDP. Insanity.

They were clearly only this successful because their splash screen didn't say "Personal Edition". :D

Nope - Your the first. :p
Really - can one app make a stock rise so much for - a free app? I just don't get it.
This is where I fail to understand the BIG game that is publicly traded company stocks.

You might be simply failing to stand how big the game is. Estimates here put the game as getting more network traffic then Twitter. And it's still early days. It would not surprise me if it keeps getting bigger over the next few months.

So many possibilities for social engineering with this game. Traffic profiles have already been affected. It would not surprise me if it eventually messes with land values too.

I hadn't thought through the possibility of companies using lures. This puts monetisation in a whole new ball game. It's plausible that Nintendo might never need to aggressively monetise players, business revenue might be enough.

Companies aren't just using Lures only, they're also offering other methods to get players inside:

Even if the hype for this game doesn't last beyond a few months, the effect on "society" and ridiculous popularity is likely to cause it to become a case study for some time now I'd bet.

And it isn't even globally released yet!

Well... it looks like someone launched something VERY big again. When I see first mention of something on xkcd of all things, it implies a very big marketing campaign.

Wow. That's great for Unity. All their augmented VR options are paying off:)

Hearthstone too - there are some really major games made with Unity.

One of the hardest lessons to learn about investing, especially in tech stock is that you buy on the rumor and sell on the news. Right now, people are buying because there are rumors of how Nintendo is going to monetize it, once they do announce their big plans for monetization, it is time to sell. New investors very frequently buy on the news, and and up buying at the peak.

I just went by one of the local technical institutes and there were a bunch of people standing (and sitting) around at the edge of the parking lot staring at their phones. Was that likely Pokemon Go?

If you thought people were zombies by constantly being on their phones, then wait untill you see the new types of zombies the Pokezombie.

Today a relative was crashed into by a nimrod driving around looking for Pokemon. I understand people loving a game, and wanting to "catch em all" or whatever - but when they are endangering others by whirling around in vehicles starting at their phone.... meh.... they need a speedometer built in, and if the user appears to be driving, cut the damn app off!

Ingress has this feature and Pokemon Go is by the same devs, so I'm kinda surprised it's not there.

Perhaps they assumed the majority of users would be too young to drive? Then again the "pokemon" generation is mostly adults now (me haha) so I would think they'd have thought that far ahead...

Pokemon Go doesn't count driving for distance. However play by passagers is legit, so turning the app off while driving doesn't make much sense.

However if there are enough Pokemon related accidents you will find governments calling for the game to be speed locked. So I imagine it will happen in some jurisdictions.

If I recall, the speed cap is something like 12 or 13mph. If you are moving faster than that it doesn't count.

Which is freaking hilarious on the train! At every stop you see most everyone flicking like mad to capture as much as they can before the train starts moving again.

    Pokestop ~20ft from my desk:
    IMG_0580.jpg

Our producers have bought tons of lures so there is always a lure active in office. So far the only downside is that the mural is the hall between the production area and the lunch room, we have had a few people looking down running into others with plates full of food.

Can I come work for you? Seriously.

The nearest PokeStop to my desk is a half k walk. I don't mind the walk, but it does mean I'm restricted on restocking to lunch time.

The IT guy keeps putting lures in the PokeStop that's across the street from my side of the office -- which means I can reach it from the kitchen window whenever I go top up my tea. 8)

And look what I came across in SF's Mission District:

    SF's gone PokeCrazy.

I guess that makes me Data, because I don't own a cell phone so I am immune to this game's effects. You guys watch, I'll be the one who saves the day when the aliens come to take over while you guys are all completely consumed by Pokemon Go.

Any aliens that want to come play are welcome to join in ;).

I'm assuming if they can get here they also have the technology to upgrade the servers so they don't keep crashing every hour or so.

    Guilty as charged.

I've checked out Star Trek from time to time, by rights it should fit right in my wheelhouse. But in general the universe just bores me.

Edit: But in my defence I do know the difference between a Zombie and a Hippo ;)

Natural selection requires the men to have died, or otherwise be unable to continue breeding. These two survived.

And judging by my recent walks and conversations with complete strangers lately, Pokemon Go increases human socialisation. So its likely that Pokemon Go players have a slightly better chance of breeding then non Pokemon Go players. Especially if most of the population is playing.

If natural selection ensured common sense, logic and general enlightenment, our civilisation might have made it to the Star Trek utopia by now. However natural selection favours those who breed better, so its probably working against human progress right now.

    Oh....thats a shame

I guess Natural Selection didn't account for advances in medicine that would save Darwin Award nominees.

Man, it's sad just how true that all is.

Yeah. I reckon human genetics will be in a really interesting place in about 200 years. We've been without disease and famine and war stripping out weaker members of the population for a while now. Even cancer is barely slowing us down, and in many cases that doesn't stop breeding. Plus we have some really crazy levels of global migration and cross breeding. Nobody really knows what sort of effect this will have on our gene pool.*

Unfortunately I won't be around to study it. :(

*That's not even stopping to consider the effects of emerging technologies like gene therapy.

Plus it seems like all the stupid people I know are getting their braindead girlfriends pregnant, while all the smart people I know are too smart to bother, or know birth control exists.

Basically, where I live, the next generation of parents are breeding a lot of extra stupid into the gene pool that it doesn't really need.

If only Gene Therapy could fix stupid

They tried in MGS, and you can see how well that turned out

Is Pokemon Go a new game type e.g. 'GPS based find things game' or is it just the IP that is creating the hype?
