Any one of a bunch of reasons - broken version handling in the asset store, broken version strings in dev. editor builds, scripts, automated testing, etc, etc... As long as it stays a small fraction, I'm happy to not know for sure :)

Neat! What exactly is total 4.x usage in %? Less than 5% or so? Hard to see from the graph.

    In the last month:
    3.x - 0.04%
    4.x - 3.26%
    5.x - 96.70%

I make music / sfx asset and i'm still lusing an very unity version.
my asset includes just wav/mp3 files, so i don't think there are issues with unity version.

but my question is: should I download the latest unity version and repack my assets with it?

when you are searching for music assets, do you specify unity version required? if so, are there chances my assets are filtered and will not be shown?

    thanks!

Technically, I think Unity 5.0+ automatically transcodes all audio files upon import, meaning that in order to get the best quality to your users you should deliver wav and skip the mp3. Mp3 files would be transcoded (possibly right back to Mp3 with whatever special settings Unity uses internally for optimization). For more on this, read this, this, and this.

Therefore, it's probably a good idea to do two different uploads:
    1. Unity 3.x - This would be the earliest supported version by the asset store - or at least as early as supports the wav and mp3 file formats...
    2. Unity 5.0.0 - This is the first version that renders the mp3 versions superfluous (and lowers quality due to transcoding). In this version you would only have the wav versions of the files.
Beyond that I can't see a reason that you would need to add another package.

Yeah, I think the store still warns you that it could potentially not work with your version if packaged with an old Unity version only. This could scare off people who aren't familiar with how it works yet.

Any chance this can be updated to a simpler graph? A histogram would do just fine, labeled values and axes would be welcome too. This is a great start though :)

I'm personally phasing out U4.x from our assets. Cartoon Low Poly pack was the last one that supports Unity 4.5.5. In my opinion I think its a good idea to move to U5. Easier to manage for publishers, and users wont accidentally download the Unity 4.x versions, and try using it in U5 leading to possible errors, if they have multiple Unity versions on their computer.

Please, could someone tell me what is the best (more stable, better performance, less issues) 5.2.x version?
    5.2.1, 5.2.2, 5.2.3, 5.2.4 or 5.2.5?

    Thanks

General sense says that the latest version is the best one, since all minor versions are basically patches for 5.2.0.

Would be great if this could be automated and added to the stuff we can look at in our publisher account. I realize realtime might not be optimal for resource usage, but if it could even be scheduled to run once a week or even once a month, it would be there without someone having to pull the info to show us here. :)

Of course that data hasn't been updated for a while, but it should still be roughly correct.

Do we have updated numbers on this? I would love to see them since I'm an asset developer and would like to know how many people still use 4.X

Can this information be in the web page close to the road map in real-time?

I think if is public, users will concentrate more in only one vr. The most in use in that particular moment. Users will choose to use the "popular " Vr. (And we can target better AS minimum)

If Unity publishes an API where to pull this data from, I compromise to make a free, open source editor plugin for this. Please, just give us a simple json endpoint and we, the community, will do the rest!

Thanks for the update @Thomas-K989. It seems natural that older versions decline in regards to downloads over time, but this doesn't exactly show the actual editor usage i.e. sessions on an aggregated user basis, like shown in Aras' diagrams. Any chance to get something like that too? For example, what's the percentage of users still below Unity 5.3?

@Thomas-K989 is there really no way we can access this data in JSON format or any other computer-friendly format? I would love to see this info integrated in the editor. In fact if Unity where to publish this info on a public URL, I'm would love to make an open-source and free editor plugin for all the community to use. Of course it would much better if Unity itself would provide on their own, maybe as part of the Asset Store tools.

    Hello everybody!

Is it possible to have an update for the new year?

I mean, like in the first answer, a real graphic of Unity Editor usage.

As I read, this seems to be manually done. Is there a way to script that?

Also voting for having this done in an automated way and posting it somewhere every month. Imo it's important for asset developers to have these statistics.

    Hmm, thanks...
If I understand correctly this shows download of Unity version, right? So it doesn't say anything about which version is used the most out there.
So what I get from the graph is that the newest version is always the most downloaded one... which is what you would expect...

As a suggestion, this usage graph could be included in our Asset Store Publisher Dashboard. This way only publishers get to see the information and can adjust their package updates accordingly.
