Here's what I have so far (about 5 mins modelling time, i.e. not much at all):

This will definitely get better! :) And where to put the shield? That crystal's the hint... ;)

My submission. Had some problems with getting the alpha to look decent. Got it to work though. Might make minor texture changes but here it is:

Already posted my submission but just wanted to show this. Imported my shield into Unity using Lars' Custom Tree Importer. So it is using tree creator shaders and the branches bend with the windzone.

Here is a webplayer: Nature Shield (14mb)

Here is a webplayer with less image effects: Nature Shield02 (14mb)

Hi guys, I now have another WIP shot! Courtesy of Art class...
    upload_2015-3-23_10-39-4.png
True, nothing's textured yet, but I just finished an assessment, so now I have a bit more time to work on this. Have yet to finish geometry modelling! :)

Hi everyone, when i saw this contest i couldn't stop thinking about the theme, so i decided to participate. its rather symbolical approach..

already started modelling, 5000 verts should be just about enough

Hey Benzy,i like your concept very much :).
Would you like to share your uvs?I have spotted some seams across the mess on some places that there's no need for them to be,and your topology seems to can handle some good uvs.
    Once again cool job ;)

Hah! Sure. I'm pretty crap at UV unwrapping and did a VERY quick retopo on this guy but I'd be happy to send the model and see if you wanna take a crack at it. I'll warn you though it's a bloody mess.

Hey Thomas,is there any problem helping Benzie fixing some issues with her uvs?
I'm just gonna fix some stuff all the art is still done by her...so is it allowed?

Team work isn't really allowed here in this case. Every should try for themselves. You can help indirectly but the work has to be done by herself. In essence, she should show her UV layout and take pointers. We're here to learn along the way :)

    here is my wip...
    natures_shield_wip.jpg
already learned two important things in this contest-
1,dont forget to look at the concept often (even if its yours)..
2, share the stuff as you go and dont wait(now i have some highpoly finished and already doing textures, its kinda hard and time consuming to go back and make changes:()

    Hi all,

and just great entries again! I started directly with a high poly model. Wanted to go for something different and since I saw very vew character art in the previous challenges I decided to give it a try. It's amazing how many already had a similar idea this time xD

I'm not an expert if it comes to characters design or anatomy at all, heaven forbid, but that's exactly why I wanna give it a try now :) I only ever did a male bust of a drawf before and some smaller practices, so if you notice any anatomical weirdnesses in my entry feel free to tell me so that I will do my best to correct them :)

I tried myself at a female character, kind of a mage who's using the elemental forces of the nature to protect everything.

    ele_wip.PNG
You can see she's using earth and water to shield herself currently. Gonna let her do something fancy with
fire and air, too, of course :D

@essimoon2 That looks awesome I can just imagine the fire and air effects there too :)

Do you texture before you do retopology? Does that distort the textures at all? Never really tried high poly sculpting before :p

Thanks, glad you like it and hope to finish it in time^^

It really depends, I guess. Normally if you start with a high poly model from scratch you don't have uvs for that since the topology is a mess :D In that case you can texture using for example vertex colors to later bake them to a texture which i occasionally do to get a base texture. in this case I guess I'm gonna do it like this:
    1. Started with High Poly model, so no uvs are available
    2. Painted some base colors to vertex colors.
    3. Gonna export it when it's done, do a retopo and bake vertex colors to uvs.
    4. Blend ao and cavity maps into the base texture to get a more interesting look.
    5. Refining "final" texture by hand in a 3d painting program (e.g. Mudbox).

I like to paint the base colors in an early stage. It helps to get a better impression of how it might look in the end :)

I would suggest load the cavity map in sketchfab,it now uses it to occlude light according to it,it worked pretty well for me ;)

Oh right thats a good idea! Gonna try it, too :D
Though I think you mean Ambient Occlusion. Cavity shouldn't change when lighting conditions change as far as i know.

Well it will occlude the light, the curvarture or cavity map can be used to drive this effect(Besides don't forget that it's a map defining the hard edges or in general the negative space into your model,so it can be used for furthen info on the lighting. & of course like you said you can add the AO map into your diffuse.

I hope we can tweak the models further untill the deadline even if we have said we're done with them right Thomas?
I'm enhancing my normals quality and scaling up the shield as you had told me Thomas :)

    Here is my final version.
I scaled up the shield a little,as Thomas has advised me to(Thx Thomas :) ) and since i seted up everything again i improve ground's quality, improved just a little bit the textures of the shield and last but not least i added some nice butterflies over there to enforce the nature style even more...
    Hope you like it :)

This is my final version. As a sketchfab newbie I had to do some manual work to make the materials work with sketchfab because I used some procedural materials (bake them to textures and so on). I've learned a lot making this little scene.

Thanks for the contest and good luck to everyone :)
