The import window for assets (such as when installing from the asset store) in this beta is pretty crazy. Instead of the normal tree view, it separates everything out into a one-level-deep sort of tree view with repetitions of all the folders... is this a bug or a feature? If it's a feature, please kill it and go back to the original version, which made way more sense.

I do experience the same problem. (see attached screenshot)
Basically every subfolder has its own top level entry.

I find that it only happens after switching to .Net 4.6
    I'm using Unity 2017.1.0b3

I'm NOT experiencing the problem. I tried with 2017.1.0b3 and 5.6.0f3 with .NET 4.6.1

    Here is the 2017.1.0b3 image:

    Here is the 5.6.0f3 image:

Try to restart Unity, else reboot your PC or else try reinstalling Unity.
I encountered a different and strange problem like the folder icons being distorted. That was due to wrong BIOS settings. In case your BIOS settings are wrong, try resetting/correcting them and restart Unity.
    Hope that helps.

Weird, I assumed everyone's was messed up. :) Yeah mine looks like 2dgame's:

Here's the same asset importing in 5.6 (the correct view) -

I'm also using .NET 4.6 and it was happening in both 2017.1.b2 and 2017.1.b3

So, this is still happening in my main project, but when I created a clean project, it was not. Any idea what might be lurking in my project settings to cause this?

I take it the project itself is to big to submit with the bug?

Yeah I can't submit the main project. If I have time I'll try to figure out how to repro it in a new project but I'm kind of pressed for time this week.

Any chance this will get fixed soon? There is now a repro, turns out you just have to turn on .NET 4. I'm sorry I called it terribad. :p

This has already been fixed and is working it's way into 2017.1. Look for bug number 916470 in release notes.
