Standard unity sphere and textures

So I have a prefab based upon the standard unity sphere (GameObject > Create Other > Sphere) that I'm wrapping with a variety of textures. The seams match up perfectly, except there are these swirls at the top and bottom of the sphere for each texture. It looks like the sphere geometry comes together at the poles in a way that doesn't work with texturing.

The 3d object side of things is not my forté - mainly I'm just using objects given to me, but in this case I have pre-made materials for each texture that I can apply to the generic sphere. In the material preview, there are no swirls. So am I missing something, or is the standard unity sphere not suited to textures somehow?
