SpeedTree shader looks cheap

My grass look so cheap, there is not subsurface scattering and I don't know which other things are missing to make it look real.
I'm still too far away from my UE look.

Do the Unity devs look into this?

(are there even any lights in the scene?)

I don't know a lot about the Speedtree shaders, but you can make grass look pretty great, I've seen it elsewhere.

Also, if you want to complain about things in Unity, you'll have to be a bit more specific in order to provide useful info.

Yes, there are lights in the scene.
I am specific: As it looks to me, there is no SSS in the SpeedTree shader.
I'm using Unity 5.5 beta, so I don't know if anything is broken or simply still missing.

You can't have "proper" SSS on something that doesn't have thickness (as those grass planes are).

Do you have an example of what you're trying to achieve? (in Unreal even)

Yes, this is what I'm striving for:

That's not grass? I think SpeedTree leaves already do that?

No, the SpeedTree leaves currently (Unity 5.5) don't have SSS yet. In the UE video you can also see grass.
It looks amazing with SSS and AO.
I would like to see that in Unity, too.
AFS is abandoned, so the only option currently is to wait for Unity creating a good foliage shader.

I think it should be mentioned in the Unity Roadmap.

I mean it's nature, not some seldom requested feature.

Crude test but it looks like it's doing "something", no?

(although I guess it's more like faulty specular :p Also, once again, there's no grass in that video)

I think I saw that in another video then. I will try to locate it.
But I think we can agree on that SSS and AO is missing in the current Unity SpeedTree shader, right?

To me the Nature/SpeedTree shader in Unity 5.5 Beta doesn't look like it supports thickness. Unless it's secretly extracted from one of the channels. Does anybody have more info on this? I couldn't find anything useful on the forum about Unity+SpeedTree and their efforts.

Yes, something official from Unity is needed, not something done by somebody who can't afford supporting newer Unity versions anymore, like AFS.
