Audio Projector Question

Short version: My projector takes between 2-5 attempts at turning on before it finally fires. The lamp is only about 1/2 through it's life expectancy. What gives?

Long version: I have a Mitsubishi XL7100u. We've had it for three or four years and it's worked flawlessly the whole time. Last week, it started taking 2-5 attempts to turn on before it finally fires. It will begin the warmup process, go through that for 1min, and then immediately go to the 2.5min cool down process without the lamp ever lighting. Not cool. It has a 4,000hr lamp life expectancy on eco mode (which I've run since day 1) and I'm only just above 2,000hr. Even on full power the lamp is supposed to last 3,000hr. Is it common for lamps to not get to their life expectancy?
