So I made a model in Maya, saved the file to my Desktop, but I can't figure out how to open it in Mudbox. Help?

there is a free plugin for Maya (windows) which is a one button solution made by Wayne Robson. otherwise save it as .obj or .fbx then open that file in Mudbox. Hope that helps.

    Sincerely,

If you're using the 2011 versions of both, there's a single command to go back and forth now. In Maya File> Export Selected To MudBox

you should export it to FBX or OBJ, if your FBX didn't work you should use FBX Converter
