    You may need to look into the Editor.log file a bit more to determine the cause of the error. The error message you have provided is a general one. It does not indicate the root cause.

    If the root cause is the Facebook SDK issue discussed above, I would recommend trying the latest Facebook SDK release.

    I am using the latest versions - Facebook SDK 7.9.0 and Unity 5.5.0f3.
    I had try to build WebGL using official Facebook step by step instruction: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/unity/getting-started/canvas
    And I have error "il2cpp.exe did not run properly".

    It looks like the relevant error here is:

    Access to the path 'E:\programs\Unity\Projects\New Unity Project\Assets\FacebookSDK\Plugins\iOS\FBSDKShareKit.framework' is denied.

    It seems that an iOS native plugin is being compiled for WebGL, which is incorrect. This is a known bug in 5.5.0f3. You should be able correct it by using the latest 5.5 patch release or by manually disabling this plugin for WebGL in the plugin inspector.

    Maybe it will help someone: I had the same problem building WebGL with unity 5.5.2f1 (actually this problem - Editor\Data\il2cpp/buildil2cpp.exe did not run properly). So I did following things:

    1) re-install Unity and Visual Studio 2015 (with path without cyrillic symbols). After that I received this error: FileNotFoundException: Could not find file "D:\Education\SolarSystem\SolarSystem\Temp\StagingArea\Data\Native\build.asm.js;

    2) disable "Strip Engine Code" in Player Settings > Other Settings

    And now it works, I have my WebGL build

    Josh, we tried to build our project with the IL2CPP backend and disabled stripping using Unity 5.6.0, however we get the similar error:

    This looks to be a slightly different error from the one reported in this thread. I don't think it is related to the engine code stripping option.

    Either our forum software or my browser is not properly parsing the non-ASCII characters in the error message, but it looks like the C++ compiler executable for Android is not being located correctly. Can you translate the error message that shows up like this in the log files?

    Josh, thank you very much for answering! I was able to decrypt it - basically it says that specified file was not found... Can you please tell me if it is possible to enable verbose logging in order to decipher what file IL2CPP was looking for?

    Maybe try to reinstall the Android NDK then. I suspect that is the most likely culprit in this case.

    Indicates that there is an extern static method in C# named instaPluginInit. This method should exist in a native library, and that library must be available to the native linker from the NDK at build time. I suspect that the C# code should be removed from the build for Android using something like #if UNITY_IOS. But I'm not familiar enough with these plugins to be sure.

    Thanks, Josh, I see the issue now... The Instagram plugin can be easily fixed, but can you please tell me what can be done with the other plugin, which completely hides its implementation in a managed library?

    For the other case, you will likely need to talk with the vendor of the plugin. They might have a different managed assembly that works with Android/IL2CPP.

    I begin to get the "il2cpp.exe did not run properly!" error after making any decent number of minor scripting changes and attempting a second build. The solution is typically to completely close the Editor and open it again to perform the build. The first thing any developer will ask you when building their code and getting an error like this is "did you try running a clean?" since that will eliminate the use of stale files or invalid references.

    We would love to see a bug report for this issue, if possible. I'm not aware of any current problems with incremental builds and IL2CPP, so if you're seeing one, more details might help us to correct it. I certainly agree that restarting the editor should not be necessary. In fact, restarting the editor should have no impact on the IL2CPP build cache, since it is persisted after an editor restart.

    A bug report is not possible, since it occurs when making a second build after any decent number of minor scripting changes and there is no specific step that triggers it. The IL2CPP build cache, unless you are talking about a different variation of build cache, is located in Temp/StagingArea/Il2Cpp/il2cppOutput of my project. The entire Temp directory is cleaned when closing the Editor, unless that is unintentional. If Temp is meant to be left behind in full, then I am lucky mine is "broken" due its ability to resolve the issue.

    Actually, I was talking about a different build cache. The files in Temp/StagingArea/Il2Cpp/il2cppOutput are the generated C++ file that IL2CPP creates. Each time you build, those files are re-created. Indeed, you are correct in saying that this directory is deleted each time the editor shuts down.

    I was referring to the build cache of the C++ compiler output (the object files). That is located in Library\il2cpp_android_armeabi-v7a (for the armv7 build of Android/IL2CPP), and it persisted across editor restarts. So although the C++ code is generated each time, and object file should not be compiled again unless the content of the associated C++ file changed.

    So I guess the question now is this: When this happens again, can you provide the full error message or the editor log? That will help us determine if the problem happens during code conversion from IL to C++, or if it happens during the C++ compilation.

    I can try not shutting down the editor for a few builds. I had gotten in the habit of only compiling a build at the end of any planned changes and then shutting down. It wasn't a huge inconvenience and prevented the issue.

    I have not come across the issue I was explaining since using 5.5.3f1. It appears something in that version, or one very close to it if I skipped an update, has prevented this from happening. It looks like there will be no need to look for a way to fix it, since it has already been fixed.

    I wonder if something is wrong with the Unity installation. It looks like Emscripten can't find something that it should be able to find. Can you try installing again to be sure?

    Same error on 2017.1 for webgl build. I've completely wiped Unity from my hard drive and reinstalled it 3 times now. No luck.

    that is likely a windows-specific bug we just fixed. Please try to reproduce with 2017.1.0p3 as soon as it's released in the next few days.

    I had similar problem too. Without wanting to rant, I just want to save time for peeps struggling with this: I had to rename the directory, because it was unacceptable for Unity3d to have "á, é, etc." characters in the path...

    I am using unity version 5.6.1f1, When building for WEBGL its showing error like below.

    Error 2: Exception: C:\Program Files\Unity\Editor\Data\il2cpp/build/il2cpp.exe did not run properly! ...........

    Its become very frustrating now,I am trying all the solution in different forum but not able to find a solution.

    Please help me how we can solve it.

    It looks like this is the relevant error message:

    Unhandled Exception: System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file 'C:\Users\ctrln-3d\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp4AAE.tmp' because it is being used by another process.

    I'm not sure what that file is, but it might be something used by Emscripten during the WebGL build process. We have seen this kind of error in a few other cases when a virus scanner is interfering. Maybe that is happening here as well.

    I believe that this issue with WebGL has been corrected. Please try the latest 2017.1 patch release, available here: https://unity3d.com/unity/qa/patch-releases?version=2017.1

    The "check for updates" feature of the editor only checks for new major releases (e.g. 2017.1, 2017.2, etc.). It doesn't look for patch releases. The purpose of patch releases is to fix very specific errors (like this one), but patch releases are not too discoverable.

    This actually looks like a slightly different error. Are you able to build an empty project for WebGL correctly? I wonder if something is wrong with the Unity installation on your machine.

    Using latest unity 2017.3.0b2 I get this error even on an empty build with gradle and il2cpp -
