    Our Groundbreaking Technology. Your Price.
CRYENGINE is now available as a Pay what you want service, allowing users to set their own price for it. If you like the service we provide, we suggest contributing to its ongoing development. You can also choose contribute up to 70% of any payments to our new Indie Development Fund, which we will use to support promising indie games built with CRYENGINE.

    CRYENGINE
    What's Included?
    • The latest version of CRYENGINE with all its features
    • Full Engine Source Code
    • Full commercialization for any games created
    • 100% royalty-free
    • Access to all supported platforms
    • Primed for VR development
    • Buy and sell assets on the Marketplace
    • Access to Learning resources

I just saw this news, gotta say I am shocked.
Not only do they go 100% royalty-free, it includes FULL ENGINE SOURCE CODE.
    Did I say its free?

So now that UE4 let's user have source code access, and CryEngine too, Unity now is the only popular engine that is still closed source.

    What's Unity going to do?

I'd bet they'll just ignore it.

It is a nice gesture, but I'm not sure if I should invest time into CryEngine at this point, also it smells like an attempt to attract user base (and introduce paid service later).

Well, CryEngine is offered it as "Pay what you want". Meaning $0 is an option. That could potentially top both unity and unreal 4.

Although, I think I found a catch here:
Also, they do not offer any free support. Support is paid on per-seat basis.

    Unity is not royalty free.

Your free license is not really free when you hit the $100,000 dollar ceiling, than you have to buy Unity Pro.

Also, Unity is closed source. On the other hand, CryEngine full source code is now included.

...CryEngine is also a non-opensource engine with limited code access. Check the license. You are not allowed to share/redistribute engine, tools, etc. You get to read the code, but it is the same deal as with UE4. Nothing exceptional.
