I tried to start unity from within fluxbox instead gnome-shell, and this allowed me to log in!

I guess that isn't really a workaround though. You cannot access the Asset Store and that is kinda a big deal.

    Confirmed, works on Fluxbox.
I thought that would be something related to the composition manager, which is used by gnome-shell among others but not by Fluxbox on default but I've checked that by killing xcompmgr and I still couldn't sign in on Awesome.

Same problem here: Can't type any characters at login - and 'work offline' button not present. Just for the records.

I'm also having issues with this - unable to type any characters in the login window. Upon hitting spacebar or enter, the launcher crashes and outputs "Aborted." to stdout.

Running Gentoo 4.3 on NVIDIA binary driver under XFCE4.

The same issue with dwm/wmii. Solved it by switching to fluxbox temporarily.

A good workaround for now is just installing fluxbox, reboot and switch to it in the login window

    I basically can't do anything:
    • Asset store window doesn't scale properly on resize
    • Once Asset store window is closed it breaks other windows that it was docked with leaving it all white with no tabs
    • Can't login (Due to input fields broken)
    • Can't create new project (unless I create the folder and open it from within Unity)
    • Can't use input fields: asset store, login, creating a new project
      • All other fields seem to work

Okay, I have a silly question. I installed fluxbox and log in but now I don't know any longer how to open Unity. I'm totally unfamiliar with fluxbox desktop. When type to console
    whereis unity
    I got
    unity: /usr/share/unity
and there the only file is "client-scopes.json"
    Any help would be appreciated.

    edit: 3.16.0-34-generic + Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela

    edit 2:
    I found it:
    /opt/Unity/Editor/Unity
    and manage to log in

Same problem, latest ubuntu and unity linux build. Cannot sign in, keyboard input not working. Does not matter how i access unity (via applications, via terminal, etc). Keyboard simply not working, therefore cannot open unity at all. Fix???

I've had success downloading the previous build (5.1.0f3+2015091501) and just signing in with that, then running the newer build to open the project.

Trying to download previous deb file but it keeps dropping. I'll keep trying/

"fluxbox"? what is that, a Windows emulator or a new Ubuntu front end or what?

Sorry if that's a dumb question, new to Ubuntu.

I also figured it out with Fluxbox. :D

    I've tried Gnome3 and Xfce4.

    But these were not working.

For what it's worth, thought I would mention I couldn't log in on Fedora 23 using Gnome 3 or Mate...but I could log in using Plasma. I didn't try xfce, but I do have that installed.

Edit: Just tried Unity on xfce and couldn't log in or type in any input.

    Plasma 5 works fine, though.

Same issue on Elementary OS Freya; cannot type into login. Pressing Enter crashes Unity. Had the same issue with the previous build.

After installing fluxbox I was able to login and bypass the screen.

    Notes for next victim:

    From Ubuntu -
In terminal - sudo apt-get install fluxbox
Log out, click Ubuntu icon by session login, select FluxBox, login.
Right click on desktop to find applications, browse to terminal.
    Execute: /opt/Unity/Editor/Unity

Some mod should just stick this at the top or something.... people are too lazy to read/search the forum...

There are some other ways but that is the most simple and fastest way: "noob safe"

I had this issue, what I've done has been to close and start Unity again, sometimes you can type in. Don't know if it will help.

I don't know if this is the right place but there is also a weird bug. I normally use i3 window manager on Ubuntu 14.04 x64 but it's impossible to login Unity using it. So I installed fluxbox and finally logged in and then switched back to i3 window manager.

But the thing is, in play mode when I use arrow keys to control my character, Unity suddenly focuses other windows such as inspector window or console window. So it never focuses Game window and this makes impossible to test the game.

One might wonder what kind of desktop environment the porters of this editor use, when it's not even tested in two of the most commonly used graphical environments today: Gnome and Unity?
And I don't mean this post in a snarky way, I am genuinely curious.

A peculiar sidenote: In Fluxbox one can sign on, but the editor never shows up when you start a new project.

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 14.04. Cannot type anywhere when starting unity for the first time with registration page. When logging in with fluxbox windows manager, Unity works. But if I switch back to my Gnome Classic window manager, I pass the registration screen, but then I cannot type anywhere when I try to create a new project.

There is some seriously wrong with this unity release, using some kind of obsure way of accessing the keyboard.

Had this issue on Kubuntu 15.10. Switching to AMD fglrx seemed to fix it, though it may have been a fluke since text entry did not work in the first-install survey that followed after log-in.

Edit: Confirmed text entry doesn't work anywhere else in Unity that appears to use the web browser component. Entering text in the standard GUI works fine, but not in the asset store or any of the dialogues of the launcher ('Create new project', etc.)
