Broken Edit and Continue: Will it ever be thoroughly documented?

The Unity Live Recompile feature... it's just so hard to maintain. Will we ever get to a place where it works and has clear, simple guidelines to getting it to work?

 

It's pretty broken.

I've got a solution here, which basically turns the feature off. It unticks the hot reloading checkbox when you go into play mode, and ticks it again when you leave play mode.

 

Here's a good write up for supporting Unity AutoRefresh.

Includes sections like "The basic flow of hotswapping" and "What exactly is preserved during hotswapping".

However, it's not official guidelines if that's what you were hoping for.
