Anyone know how to remove the circular effect on the game window with 5.6?

After upgrading to 5.6 I see the game window like the image below.
It's fine in the headset, but people occasionally want to record/etc and the display is distorted.

I know I can add another camera and set the Target Eye to "none (main display)", but there's a performance cost doing that.

Is there another easy solution that doesn't hurt performance and will resolve this (make the image in the window square again)?

Unfortunately not. What you're seeing is the render target used by the VR system which is going to have occlusion mesh rendering and other artifacts to make it appropriate to the HMD. If you want to have a cleaner view on PC, you'll want to use the second camera as you've referenced. This does mean another rendering pass, but there's no other way.
