Hello commUnity! Some first glimpses of my project - this is a recent AI handling test I did:

P.S. sorry for the choppy video - I'm new to video-capture

Those car physics look like some of the best I've ever seen... I can't really tell for sure without playing though.

It looks so fun! I would love to play it. :D

Dark and Gloomy... Me likes ;)

    2 Questions:
1.Is the AI supposed to like knock you off road or something? and thats how you die/ get a game over?
    2. The Car physics is freaking good... Did you pay for it from the Asset store? :O

I think the car physics look very nice but maybe a little floaty. Like the car has some extra bouncy shocks. I would expect this on a older 70's model full size car but not a smaller car like that.

Looks cool though. I'd love to play it as well.

Very good car physics, and nice ambient. Is it kinda derbi destruction game, with cars bumping into you, or shooting aspect?

Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated :)

Car physics: "CarX lite" with slightly augmented grip (*1.2f)

Gameplay: Yep, one gameplay element is NPC's chasing, ramming and trying to stop the player. Right now the chasing element is pretty much done. The ramming is still very basic - that's the next thing I'd like to code. There's also some more advanced tactics planned, when more than one car is chasing the player.

The scene in the video above was to test the driving style of the chasing cars. I wanted those to drive agressively and slide as much as possible when taking corners in proximity of the player. The NPC cars are always on the verge of loosing grip - which was quite a challenge to setup/code.

For the suspension settings, most values correspond to real-world numbers. The damping was lowered for now to achieve a slightly more "bouncy" behaviour.

As someone who (kinda) drifts in real life, and stuff, I think this looks incredibly realistic. Just my two cents. ;)

I thought about the shooting aspect but in the end I would like to avoid it. The enemy cars should be performing advanced maneuvers to stop the player (ramming, P.I.T., blocking). We'll see how "smart" I can get them to be. It's the next step on my long to-do list :)

I love the style of the game! Reminds me of Gummo.

Staying the course in your dark, gritty style, I would love to see it taken further. Staying the course of our reality by shoving profanity, mental illness, poverty, homophobia and racism in our faces. A game that brings up all sorts of uncomfortable emotions to provoke critical thinking. A beautiful thing!

In short, use themes that are taboo to talk about. They exist, but nobody ever talks about them. Use this game to promote intelligent conversation on these topics to bring awareness.

Incorporating a music style like that of Spazz would fit this game perfectly! Play your game while listening to the album I linked and feel what I am talking about.

However, if you want to be more marketable instead of a cult hit, you can incorporate creative commons bluegrass music
and keep it PG, but I think that would be a waste of your artistic style.

Do you have a page/blog that we can follow your progress or just Youtube?

Provoking critical thinking is certainly a prevalent chunk of my goals with this project (and it's twin animation film). I must admit I haven't played many games that do though... if any at all.

:D Funny, thinking about the game, a couple days ago I remembered Brujeria

I have a website I haven't updated for years... but I am planning to build a new one specifically for this project. There's also most of my films floating around on the internet - this is the last I did:

Bravo! The short gets me thinking about the city I live in.

I would definitely get your website active again and start creating a buzz.

Will your characters be able to get out of the car? I was thinking having them stop by a house or store and spray paint it. This would also allow you to pick up passangers (like under aged prostitutes) who can shoot enemies from the passenger side while you take them to their work location.

It would be cool to have some Gummo references strategically placed.

Sorry to unload ideas off, I am sure you do not need them. It is just your game really inspires me to create.

Here are two terrain deformation tests I did a while ago - not sure whether this will be in the final build (for performance reasons obviously) but it's great fun, for sure:

I'm really into offshoot survival titles and I love realistic driving (with cockpit view especially). This is one of the most interesting things I've seen.

Will it have gear shifting? (I love gear shifting).

    I'd love to play this.

I always thought they should make a version of Fallout where you drive cross country to avoid an advancing radiation cloud, stopping off along the way for action sequences to gain stuff to upgrade your car. You should totally make that, it'd be awesome.

I love games like these, especially the deformable terrain. But sadly, my computer can't handle it. And yes this does remind me of spintires, which was completely epic! I feel like this game could already be turned into a beta by tomorrow. Good work.

Yes it will (choice between manual/auto) :)

Spintires' dynamic terrain and vegetation is great. Hopefully Unity's terrain will get some much needed love in the near future - especially performance-wise.
Right now I get acceptable results on one 100x100m terrain at 257 res. Dividing 4x40km into 100x100m chunks = not an option.

Thank you all for fantastic feedback and all the very best for 2015 :)

A couple of new vids with some random driving-around. Rewrote the steering and braking behaviour of the AI cars and reverted to sim mode with realistic wheel friction. More coming soon!

Here's a brand new gameplay trailer showcasing the car-chase part of the game:

Had a tougher time recording this because the NPC's are starting to drive better than the player :) while maintaining a lively and risky driving style. Hooray!

Personally, I find it disappointing, how easy it is to escape NPC's (cops, villains) in most open-world "driving games" (GTA, Mafia, TDU..). Although those games do compensate with quantity over quality, and cheating on the physics, the car chases don't feel genuine at all.

    Anyone feels the same?

Hey! love the atmosphere on this, thought you had abandoned it after so long without news, glad you didnt :)
About the volumetric fog, this came out recently and looks good, though not sure if it suits your needs, since i think its only lit from one directional light.

Thank you :). Yeah, I've been extremely busy finishing my new film, so I had to put this project on hold.

I do need the fog to be affected by multiple lights. To my knowledge there is no asset capable of this. Well, except Jove2.

    Thank you :)

I'm in love with this. mind blowing

I watched your videos twice, second time with THIS playing in the background

edit: What really would add something to the immersion of ..fear? would be if your main character would turn his head occasionally.. his head lit up brightly be the chasers cars lights.

Well Jove was discontinued recently so you wont have much luck with that either! The only "problem" i see in your current implementation is when the camera passes through the particles (i think at least from the videos), but i dont think any player will even notice it, i think it looks great :)

Thank you for your kind words. That's a cool track (and music video)!

Yeah, the head turning would help a lot. I just didn't have time to implement that yet. Kind of had to force myself to stop adding stuff and release that video. There's always something to add in gamedev :) ... and being a one-man-band with still limited coding skills doesn't help.
The last thing I've added are the guys in the chasing cars. Basically just ragdolls constrained to the vehicle.

It looks good at far distances but doesn't work when near light source/camera. And you can often see the seams of the cross-plane mesh particles...
I've discovered Lexie's volumetric lighting solution a couple months back, and now he's posted on these forums. Looks fantastic: dynamic-volumetric-lighting-replacement

Made a video of me racing against an AI-controlled car:

Which car is player-controlled? Yellow or blue?
