Oh boy. I'm going to hope my U5 preorder was really worth it. I really hope Unity announcement Livestream has some good news.

Well, I've been using Unity for some time now, and IMO UE4 is growing fast, looks much better, and has more options in terms of quality (Unity !VS. Unreal), and Unity has it's own special use cases, but for high ends its not there yet.
I initially set the plans to use Unity for our current project, if Unity doesn't try to do some more stuff, I guess we won't be around for another game. But I'm curiously waiting for the announcement and will wait for 5.3 to see what are the stuff we gettin' (better Text rendering, SSRR, Temporal AA, new Input system, a working Terrain).

If you sell apps you would understand. A free app will be downloaded about 100x more than a $1 app. Yeah $1 is nearly nothing but it's not nothing.

Unity free (watered down) version is a joke. Sorry but thats not really a engine for developing serious games or distribution them.

Why would "serious games" use a free version of an engine anyway?

You guys are scary with all that "healthy competition" as some calls it. Unity is unity, unreal is unreal grab the one that suit better your workflow and stop this S***.

All I see is battling on that stuff, I know that in capitalism terms this is acceptable but come on, competition is made to make one of the parts lose and all I see in every damn field that is a thing to be happy for. Then here we go getting bombarded with marketing and crap.

Don't you know? that $ 19 are the only thing stopping them from doing actual games ;)

(I just want to mess with the angry UE4 fans here but I also think this is good news for the dev community)

Don't forget that not every dev is from united states. Some devs are for example from india where people usually earn no more like a dollar per week.
So they would have to sell their house basically to afford the ue4 before it went free.

Secondly. Even unity Pro needs a ton of additional mods to be ready for AAA title. Unreal has build in next-gem graphics. Even if Unity 5 will bring a big graphical increase, it will (today) still be behind unreal, technology wise.

Tekken 7 and street Fighter 5 is developed with ue. Tekken 7 was recently released.

Check the past sales of those games and take 5%. No wonder they can make it free.

And UE 4 was developed by an industry proven team.

How can you create titles without Profiler? How to optimize the data? Reduce lag? By watering down your great product. What about Video Playback? IK Rigs? Light Probes? Occlusion Culling?

I just received the email from Epic about this. That means UE4 is direct competition for Unity Free. I'm surprised Epic did this, because I always assumed they could make good money off the $19/month subscriptions. I guess they decided to try to grab market share, and this latest move will certainly accomplish that.

Anyway, I have been subscribed to UE4 since it was announced last year. While there are certainly things I like about UE4, I still personally prefer using Unity. During the time I used Unity and UE4 side by side, I decided that I liked Unity so much more that I eventually purchased a Pro license of Unity. Even with UE4 available for free, I am still more excited about Unity.

My point wasn't saying that UE4 is bad or not, it's just not battle-tested yet. Epic is an industry proven team, yes! But we do talk about the engine., don't we?
How could it be battle tested? You do mention only two games, and one is still in development. If one developed game is reason enough for you to get on UE4 ok, I respect that, but that's not enough for me to call the engine itself "industry proven". It's a young engine with a rapid-development cycle. A LOT of stuff changes with each minor and especially each major release. Not a solid base for development, if you ask me.

Nice to have competition. Both engines are striving to commoditize game development. I still think Unity is king in mobile and multiplatform development and Unreal in PC graphics.

But it's a possibility that Unity can add another Free+Pro tier camp.

    Poor Indie = Unity Free
Low income Indie but want pro features = Unity Pro Free (+5% royalties)
Indie to Professionals = Unity Pro

This is the StarBucks strategy, in 3 years when Unity bankrupt they will be announce the new price for Unreal 9 us$15.000 per seat and 50% of royalties.

I'm pretty much 50/50 on this. UE4's pricing model (5%) is impossible for me, as a contractor, to convince my clients to get behind. In that area, unity has the clear lead. But if unity didn't have the pro version barrier, we would see many more assets on the store utilizing pro features, which would really be able to push unity's visual quality and value. The restriction for a lot of assets to want to target unity free I think hurts.

Very true. Up until you start actually making money with your project, at least. Then you'll be paying Epic a small royalty every business quarter that makes > $3000 in sales.

With Unity, you'll pay more up front if you want Pro features, but after that, you're done paying.

Once you get into the situation where you're making money enough for it to matter, Unity winds up being the less expensive option in the long run. But it might be worth it to pay a bit more in that long term, if what UE4 brings to the table is good for your project.

You have to decide that on a project to project basis, really.

Maybe if Starbucks gave away to everyone the complete business model and secret ingredients of their coffee it would be the same.

I think everyone that screams at Unity to make it free, they should just go to Unreal, bye bye, and have fun.
Unity, keep your price model as it is !

The real winner here is the game development community. As a game developer outside of my day job it's great to see the likes of Unreal and Unity be the best they can be for us, the users of the products. That said, be sure to check out our awesome news tomorrow morning. 22 hours remaining.

When money is tight, it's great to be able to cut corners where you can. It's been extremely tight for me the past year -- I was only able to give UE4 a look after lucking into a promo subscription code during the last Ludum Dare jam. I just couldn't justify spending the money on something I might not get use out of immediately. No doubt there are others in similar situations where money is...well...worth more to them. :)

You don't care because you are not involved in a bigger game in a team perhaps ?
When you are a team of indies, having the tools and engine for free is the best , while impossible to afford Unity Pro, and UE4 gives you all tools and features.
But many indies projects for mobile just need Unity that is better and C# with Unity that is more easy to use.
    You'll find varied people :
-Some making big game using last tech but that don't have money for UT Pro
-Others making smaller and medium games not needing UE4 engine and needing to produce lightweight games

Well , Unity rules for mobile and small indie games, while UE4 is best for bigger games and techs.

It's a great news, but i hope some UT5 PRo change also , as honestly i prefer C# and more easy to use engine.

Do you pay rent ? Do you eat ? Do you like to eat ?
Well, How in hell will Unity employees eat, pay rents, etc, if the engine is free ?
Unity is not Epic, Epic makes millions licensing their engine to big companies, Unity doens't.

The Starbucks strategy is sale coffe more cheap that competition and after when the competition bankrupt they return to the normal prices, is very simple, they kill the competition in a inmoral but complety legal way.

I'm absolutely excited to see this but i've called Unity my Home for the last 4 years or so now. Ill definitely download Unreal and experiment with it but i'm sticking with Unity until I see a proper reason to port my current project over.

I agree, and i hope Unity to stay a leader for indie developpers, Unity should re consider indie people that are not companies and that can't afford 1500$.

Did you know Terra 2 is using UE4 ?

Well, you are misplacing the blame then. You can't blame a pistol for shooting someone. Blame the immoral costumers who supported this terrible outrage. It will be same here, the rotten eggs will topple over to UE4 and we will be left with clean house hopefully.

I must have missed your firstly, but I'm guessing it's as well thought out as your secondly.

But you're completely right. With Unreal Engine 4 we can just spew out AAA titles non stop. Unreal Engine 4 just dropped their $19 a month price tag, no longer do you need hundreds, if not thousands of people to create a AAA title. The gaming revolution is here.
