Unity Technologies is happy to announce it's next "Unity Community Forum Challenge"! Everybody is welcome to join in and show other fellow artist what they can do and compete for the First Place!

This months Challenge is themed "That Thing In The Corner!". What could this "thing" be? A hideous little create? Scary huge monster? Or a strange looking object? It could be anything! You tell us what it is by creating a piece of art to tell the story! Come up with something new and unique. Surprise us with your imagination.

Make sure to present it as a Diorama and don't forget, you can use animations too to make your entry come alive!

Again, as a result we want to see a beautiful small Diorama/Turntable of your vision for "That Thing In The Corner!"

Post Work in Progress Screenshots or even use Sketchfab to present your work in progress. See rules below.

    1. Participants will have till the end of the month (May, 31th) to submit their Final Entry

    2. Final Entry must be a "Diorama/Turntable" showcasing the theme "That Thing In The Corner!". We ask that you use Sketchfab to post your final result here on the forum.

    3. Polycount Limitation for this Challenge is 25.000 Vertices. Only ever use as many polygons as necessary to define a shape! This is a game art challenge after all! Make use of normal maps etc to give your textures/meshes more detail.

    4. You can use normal maps, specular maps or PBR etc to enhance your work visually. There is no restriction on how many textures you can use but keep in mind that this is a game art challenge so don't go too crazy.

    5. Entrants must post at least 1 WIP (Work in Progress) Screenshots before submitting their Final Entry. We suggest you post more and get feedback! Please visit https://help.sketchfab.com/hc/en-us/sections/200485707-Uploading-3D-Models for further information on how to use and upload to Sketchfab.

    6. Your final entries must be submitted through Sketchfab. Please tag your final submission with: "UCAC-May2016".

    7. No previous work can be used. This essentially means that you should create everything from scratch!

    8. No nudity or gross violence please! Keep it clean and fun for everyone!

    9. Do not use/utilize any currently known game characters (Mario, Luigi, Sonic, etc)

We got some great prizes this month! A big "Thank You" to all the wonderful people/companies! The winners will receive the following prizes:

    1st Place

A 1 Year License of Sketchfab Pro sponsored by Sketchfab
A $100 Amazon Gift Card sponsored by Sketchfab

    2nd Place:

A 6 Months License of Sketchfab Pro sponsored by Sketchfab
A $50 Amazon Gift Card sponsored by Sketchfab

    3rd Place:

A 6 Months License of Sketchfab Pro sponsored by Sketchfab
A $25 Amazon Gift Card sponsored by Sketchfab

We hope to see many of you participate! Let's get this started and make sure to visit our Sponsors pages!

Aaargh! What is that filthy, disgusting, hairy thing in the corner?
It reeks of stale coffee, it is welded to what looks like it used to be an office chair and three beacons of rectangular light glare out into what roughly resembles a head containing two dry, bloodshot eyes and a drooling pie hole. It appears to be completely still apart from a pair of rapidly moving hands and it seems to be surrounded by an array of assorted VR headsets, game pads and other miscellaneous hardware, discarded pot noodle containers, mouldy cups, biscuit packets, pringle tubs and dirty plates.

    .....Could it be a programmer?

@SniperEvan It's not a strange theme at all. The point is that you have to be creative in every way to shine here.

@dreamhead Nice block out of your entry mate! Looking promising :)

@dreamhead That thing in the corner is intriguing in an eerie way! Have fun!

New here but love this so I will be having a go and hopefully get it finished - I have done a quick work up based on some early sketches for an idea of 'that thing in the corner' being an opportunity for revenge -

    That's some revenge that's being planned :)

A did a first sketch block out. This is inspired by the Heritage books and the movie Eragon.
    20160508-ThatthinginthecornerSketch.png

And here's my reference board. I don't think I'll make the dragon baby. Not that advanced yet, but that "thing in the corner" has to be doable :)

    Have fun everyone!

    Hi :),

I'm going for a storage room in which artifacts are stored, and some even get lost and slip between the cracks. Beware for the things lurking in the shadows, or not :p either way looking forward to work on this challenge. wip1.jpg

    cheers :)

Cool :) I like it so far but maybe it would be nice if you had like a bit of plumbing and pipes going on beneath the wooden floor to break up the shape/cut off of your scene. But that is just my 2 cents. :D Keep it up looking forward to see more progress.

    cheers.

I went back and forth a few times on several ideas, but I think I'm going to be sticking with this.

My first WIP sketchfab with details to follow it up later!

I'm going for an imaginative-kid's-pseudo-reality-late-at-night theme.

That's a clever way to cut down on vertices! Good thinking!

Haha yeah gotta save what I can, since the other pieces of my scene will likely take up a good amount of that 25,000 vert limit. The way I'm planning my scene, you'll never see the underside of that box :). I actually modeled a head, but decided not to waste the 500 odd verts that you'd never even see under the box, so I just closed it up

This is kinda what he's going to look like in the final scene.

Hi an update: started modelling the assets for my storage, the "thing" in the corner is still a placeholder.

    making more progress soon :)

I'm hoping I can finish this before the deadline!

Does it look too cluttered by any chance? I'll be using color to ensure the "thing" stands out, but just in case.

hi all a small change and update, due to time restrictions I decided to solely focus on the corner of my storage room.
this will allow me to get a better quality of work vs. a whole scene with minor detailed texturing.

cheers here is my mask lurking from the corner, between all the stuff that was forgotten in the storage.
the boxes are still placeholders and I will improve them later on.

    cheers :D

My final submission here. It's ok. Lot's of fun making it, of course, but I wish I knew how to portray the image in my head a bit better with Blender and sketchfab.

One final WIP before uploading to Sketchfab:

made a bit more furry version today

but as i am not 100% happy with it i am sticking to the other for my final.
With something around 60k i could make it pretty enough ^^
(still have so much to learn about poly fur)

@dark_minaz u could use fake fur. . .texture it with fur then use poly fur only on places that fur normally sticks out, blending it in with the fake(painted) fur. . . . .less 60 k polys.

not sure how to really do that, was my first poly plane fur try
but i keep searching for more tutorials on that matter (sadly most tell me to just use xgen like i normally do -.-^^)

edit: did change it a bit and went to 28k poly, now it looks better but is over the limit so i guess i stay with the other one.
@me9za if you got a tutorial for your idea would be cool, as i don't quite get how you did mean it, since animals got fur all over :)

edit 2: improved my normal map, changed my boxes slightly, added some new wing textures :)
i think now it's better overall
