As mentioned in the keynote address,
Unity 5 is now in beta and a beta will be released to Unity 5 pre-order customers
    in 4-8 weeks.

Anyone want to hazard a guess how long in between public beta and 5.0 release? I'm putting $10 on 2 months.

I'd rather have system requirements out before that, if possible.

So its clear that what was featured in the video for 5. will not be in 5.0, as some of the features were delayed, what are the features that we're still gonna get?

as I hear the in-editor realtime lightmap previews, realtime reflections [can still be done on user side], which hopefully will arrive in 5.1 or so..

Were realtime lightmap previews actually in the 5.0 video? As for realtime reflection probes, last thing i heard was that it's still unsure whether they will make it for 5.0 or later - but I'm not working on this, so don't take my word on it.

Yes, realtime reflection probes was in the teaser video released round GDC when Unity 5 was announced. We're still pushing to get that into Unity 5.0 and it seems likely that it will make it - it's shaping up nicely. But again - we would rather not ship something that isn't robust. So no promises.

As for the realtime (PowerVR) previews, this will not make 5.0, nor was this ever promised. It will land sometime in 5.x when its ready to ship.

If you guys missed Unite 2014, here is the GI talk given after the keynote. We are planning to make it available soon with all the videos. But here is a PDF for now, this contains the low-down on editor realtime previews.

tha's right it was not in the video but it was in the feature list of the 5.0 coming feature thread. whatever, as long as it arrives before 5.6, I'll wait.

Thank you, really intresting, so we have some kind of lightmap pre-views via the dynamic GI of enlighten in 5.0, that's awesome :D... waiting for the videos too

Are there more informations about what you want to achieve with powerVR aside from editor previews?

I am on the monthly subscription and get Unity 5 automatically on release. Do subscription users also get access to the open Beta like pre-order customers do?

Let's hope it will be not the same way as with "Reflection Probes", when it was promoted as Unity4 feature in
"The Butterfly Effect - Making Of " and now it somehow turns to Unity5 feature.

Any idea when the new networking features are landing? Last I heard was 5.x sometime, but it's hard to plan around that.

You should never rely on unreleased features as there's always the chance they get delayed.

Goes without saying. And I do have contingencies in place. But if there is more information available on a release window for the networking feature, I would rather know than not.

@Aras : just curious, since unity moving to full defered is there any news about transparent/translucent object to receive/cast realtime/baked shadow?

Oh, of course forward is still available. what i mean is the deferred rendering tech. Unity were using light Pre Pass before, and in unity 5 they said they moving to full deferred rendereres

Transparent/translucent things still get pushed through the forward rendering pipeline, AFAIK.

Cool. Of course Unity free will still be fully forward. How does UE4 and other fully deferred engines handle translucent shading?

Nothing has been announced with regards to that.

Pretty much every deferred renderer I've ever worked with or studied has done transparent/translucent shading via forward rendering. It's an inherent limitation of how deferred renderers and graphics hardware works - you can't easily store both the information about the translucent surface *and* the information about the surface behind it in the same pixel.

Well it will depend on your scene. The new dynamic gi will be able to work on some high end mobile devices. So it should work on most modern computer pretty good.

I am curious about theis mention of realtime reflection probes. How is the performance on that sort of thing? What if you have an out door city street using many at the same time because you have day and night cycles?

At the moment there is no performace, because they are no realtime reflection probes. I think it was in this same thread where they mentioned it depends on missing realtime specular convolution, which is not fast enough yet.
They are working on that and it is unsure if it will make 5.0 or not.

For that kind of case it would be better if using only one global cubemap, rather than cubemap per object. Or precomputed cubemap blended with predefined time.

Would look kind of crappy with city street or back alley to use one global cubemap. And as for blending... dont know how thats going to work. We don't even know if their probe system allows for swapping out cubemaps or blending them by script.

Well using precomputed cubemap are the best way to doing it at the moment, especially if it's combined with local cubemaps for small static object. As for blending and swapping cubemap you can do that already. Well of course except unity team have another secret up their sleeve.

The terrain system is what really needs to be in Unity 5. Real-Time GI is cool but I would love to be able to use the terrain system. It is unusable if you want a decent, living scene. Sorry but it is.
