Easy there... We might start speculating on how much of that post is a joke, and how much is you making sure you don't lose the bet. :D

I think I'm pretty sure now that Unity 5 will ship in October. :D

    EDIT: S**t, I didn't see the year :(

Unity Tech said Unity 4.6 will come in this summer.
But I am willing to to bet $10,000 that Unity 4.6 will never ship in this summer. Any takers?

@adam718 A Unity official just 'kinda' submitted that U4.6 will ship in Unite. I guess the first day,

True, but I somehow got the fixed idea that Unity 5 might come out 1-2 weeks after 4.6, which would justify to wait for Unity 5. The new GUI is the main reason for upgrade. But if Unity 5 is not *that* close, then of course this question is obsolete.

I wouldn't assume that Unity 5 will come out 1-2 weeks after 4.6.

Yeah, probably mixed up the talk of Unity 4.6 release, that Unity 5 has been announced for a while now, and that the major releases were every 2 years, somewhen september... so it kinda seemed close.

Actually, Andy is saying Unity 4.6 will shop before October 21, 2015. Unite is from August 19,2014 through August 22, 2014. I don't see any official indication in this thread that Unity 4.6 will definitely ship before or during Unite 2014. Personally, I suspect Unity 4.6 is going to be announced at Unite, but there has not been any confirmation of that so far.

Apologies if this has been asked.

With the new GUI, will it be easy to navigate menus using a xbox360 controller?

Unity 4.6 can't come fast enough. DFGUI has pretty much been abandoned and it's not possible to download via the asset store anymore, the developers haven't been communicating with the community and the only response we've been given is "We'll put out some updates as we get the time, but DaikonForge GUI is no longer for sale."

I refuse to work with a framework that "will be worked on as they get the time". I'm just glad I bought it on sale and I never took the time to use it.

If you have purchased it, it should be possible to download it from the asset store!

Just a heads up that this is no longer true. After sustained community feedback Unity have added the ability to download stuff that you have previously purchased even if it is no longer available for sale.

But if you need integration with PlayMaker you're completely screwed unless you pay for another out of date asset. There's also some several months old bugs that haven't been resolved at all.

I have no idea regarding bugs or incompatibilities. I just wanted to clarify that it can be downloaded again from the asset store.

Hi, will it be possible in the new GUI to have a scrollview with soft clipping (smooth alpha transparency) like in NGUI?

The new GUI looks really good. But I will start a new project soon and I was wondering: If I am going to use the old gui and I will update the Unity editro later to 4.6. Can I still use the old gui?

What will happend to the old (current) GUI?

If by the old GUI you mean OnGUI() et. al., it will still be there. It's what the Editor is built on, so it's unlikely to go away any time soon.

I guess it can be easily done by applying an appropriate image onto the mask.

You can apply image, but it won't really help as masking is done with stencils so no semi-transparency.

et al means 'and others' rather than 'and all' which would be et omnia :)
et al is generally used when there is a list of things you don't particularly care to elaborate on, as opposed to referring to one thing in particular.

The only thing worse than being pedantic is being pedantic and wrong....

et al in that case was being used exactly as you say it is supposed to. e.g. "If by old GUI you mean OnGUI, GUILayout, GUIStyles " and so on. He was using it exactly that way.

The smart money for a while has been that 4.6 would be released at Unite 2014, which is <1 week away.

Who can make the best GUI system in under a week before uGUI comes out?

First one in the asset store wins.

Haha okay, I was just hoping that the new GUI would come in time for my current project (which is GUI-intensive in some places), but unfortunately it isn't. It looks really cool in the demo videos though.

Remember, folks, this topic is "new UI System coming in Unity 4.6", not "Unreal vs. Unity thread #97,364". Thanks. :) (If you're wondering about the deleted posts.)

Figured that would happen :p Still, I don't think there's anything to say about the new UI, since we've been waiting for it for aeons. I spose that's why we got off topic.

I think we probably get 4.6 around 8/29/2014 a week after they wrap up unite 2014 which give them some time to work in some last minute fix and patches,, as for Unity 5 that most likely not coming out until Mid November 2014 Most new version usually came out after Halloween .
and as for the old GUI i seen an version of 4.6beta 9 . and the old gui stuff was still there along with the new UGUI. but as for the old gui in unity 5 it might be taken out to start the new Version with a fresh clean UI start.

Well, it'll still be in Unity, but it'll get "Legacy" caution tape strewn across all the references to it.

No, because the editor depends on it entirely. It's not going anywhere.

It'll probably change name to Editor GUI, as that's it's major role

This might confuse new users, because the "Editor GUI" as you suggest it, would be useable in the editor and at runtime, whereas all the other editor functionality can only be used in the Unity editor.
