It's amazing how little respect I have for you after reading this post. Because someone has some crossed wires in their head, they're "not truly human"? Your portrayal of psychopaths is absurdly out of whack with the reality of psychopathic behavior. Also, good job attaching a number (5%) to it, as if it makes anything you said close to fact. If you seriously think that 5% of humans are axe murderers waiting to happen, you have seriously warped perceptions about the world.

When you start labeling humans as non-humans, there is no end to the bad things that can cause.

That's another issue I had with the trailer that made me feel like it was trying too hard. The guy's monologue sounded just like a massacre shooter's letter. We really need to crush the special snowflake characteristic that's been on the rise in recent generations. Is it really hard for human beings to accept we're not all that unique or special? We're not even that interesting of an organism. We've got intelligence but our use of it is beyond embarrassing. I wish lobsters were the species that rose to the top of the food chain and gained intelligence.

If you've got a good description of evil, feel free to PM me. It's always a wonder to marvel at our language and see how infectious behaviors propagate over time. It could be an interesting thing to simulate in a computer to see how long it would take a society to break down - if that's the end result you're getting at.

That's starting to sound like religion. Justify what you might do to some others by reclassifying them as good or evil. I'm all for derailing threads (if this kind of thread can even be derailed), but pls no post things that can get a thread locked! thx

Not dolphins? Also I believe the term you intended was "sapience" not "intelligence".

I have to say that one thing that amuses me with this is seeing people who constantly make the same argument that the dev is making (that anyone who gets offended by anything deserves to be ridiculed and ignored) saying "Now, I'm not offended but" and then ranting about how offended they are. The same people constantly saying "Devs should just make whatever they want and ignore anyone who gets offended" acting shocked that this developer is just making fun of them for being offended. The same people who upon hearing any critique start whining about oppressive censorship now literally censoring this video from various places. To me, that's where the actual hypocrisy lies.

LOL. The arguments of social justice keyboard warriors are very amusing. They justify playing their favorite shooters, patting themselves on the back saying, "At least there are no naked women or minorities in it." ;)

Anything that means self awareness and or sentience. Potential to learn and invent tools for a sort of artificial, rapid evolution.

And I mean lobsters. Not that they're intelligent like dolphins are(which is nothing compared to cuttlefish!), but I like lobsters. Our lobster overlords would care for us as we do our pets.

We shouldn't label anyone as not human. There always still a human no matter how far gone down the road they are. They deserve our help to try to help them work through this.

@cynical Actually I have never played GTA. Neither have I played Mortal Kombat or other such games.

One of the rather huge problems that this game has is that it will target the people that are mentally unstable. I'm not saying that everyone here is unstable but that I lot of people who play this will be unstable. People like me and you guys can differentiate between the real world and the virtual world. People that are mentally unstable though cant. They will see it as a continuation of the virtual world.

I think that we have figured out that most games don't cause people to go out and kill others. Games like this though that are mentally depraved and that make a sport of murdering innocent humans will though. It will influence peoples minds and desensitize them. Its bad enough that we have games like GTA and Mortal Kombat. Adding more is just a recipe for disaster.

It's only a video for now, and maybe the devs are just trying to create the controversy plus marketing, then the game will be different. We'll see (I won't).
Should it really be like that, I have to say there's a pretty big difference between games like GTA, Call of Duty etc, with no need to use the word hypocrisy completely out of place. It's like comparing a regular porn movie to a porn movie where there's simulated rape. They're two completely different things. Most people will avoid the latter (I hope), and with a reason.

Don't forget that GTA was hugely controversial for a long time. It's mostly accepted as mainstream now, but it wasn't always that way.

Yeah.. The feeling suddenly became mutual. Not that your respect means anything to me beyond clarifying exactly your mindset. It meant dick on a stick before and even less now if that is possible. Go make a buck and enjoy your infection. Enjoy looking at the coffin lid at the end of your days. I will go and meet my maker with a clear conscience and know I stood in the right shoes. Unbelievable what possesses the minds of petty clowns these days. Full onslaught ponerization. Now fire up that keyboard and beat away at it with your little digits in a fury. I will tailwalk you across the pond for my amusement.

Take a breather people, no need to make this personal and get the thread locked..

Empathy, compassion, a conscience, our ability to explore our spirituality in whatever form, those are some of the things that set us apart from animals. If we start to lose or ignore those things you're essentially starting to lose your humanity.

Passing it off as "artistic expression" or excusing it as human nature is just weak. The human race should be better than that. Isn't that our goal as a race, to better ourselves in every way? We don't tolerate rape or cannibalism, things that are common in the animal kingdom. It's sad to see us falling back to our base animalistic desires and excusing it as some-kind of entitlement or "freedom". Yes, we're free to do whatever we like as humans with free will, but that doesn't excuse what we do.

There's a lot of big words getting thrown around in this thread, with everyone trying to sound profound.. I'm just going to stick to common-sense and try not to get shot...

We are all gonna stare at our metaphorical coffin lid come the time. It's the only sure bet. It's a sin to state the obvious and remind of what is inevitable? I cannot offer mercy nor judgement. That is way above my pay grade..but I can state my opinion. And I ain't "nice". Nice try though. I just try to be the best human being I can but I sure as hell ain't gonna take abuse or a public flogging from some recalcitrant reprobate. I will stuff that mouth monkey back in the jack-in-box they popped their pompous piehole out of. You want my opinion..it is basically what is stated on the site and in the book I linked to and I ain't being led down any alley to play shuck and jive with somebody's gambit. Pol Pot, the Bolsheviks, Mao, Darth Cheney, to name a few of many were not spiders who slunk around in the dark. They hijacked entire societies and infected them with their brand of psychopathy. Tens of millions died horribly. The Bolsheviks had warehouses where they gunned down masses of Orthodox Christians and then dismembered them and made piles of arms, legs, heads and gutted torsos and the 18 inch deep gutters were filled with flowing offal and blood of human beings. When these societies shook off the effects of being ponerized..or infected by evil... they returned to normal and became much more careful about those who purported to lead them. The game this thread is about is simply a symptom of the infection. My stance is a personal vaccination against a currently rampant infection. One's soul is precious and should be guarded with the life given to it as a gift.

That sounds very good, I like you. Let's ignore the rest of the sentence.

Why you know that they were all psychopaths? And all the people that followed them, also psychopaths? Don't think so. And is not the follower that does the horrible thing eye to eye to the victim the one one could assume has no empathy, to be able to do that? But there were so many followers, most of them could not be psychopaths in the psychological sense.

And how many of your 4-8% of mankind become Pol Pot, the Bolsheviks, Mao...? You call all the others with the condition non-humans too? Those who suffer and try everything to have a good life and have families loving them.

And the condition is not black and white. Where does non-human start? Can you be 45% non-human?

Edit: And is not one of the main characteristics of the cases you named here, that they called others non-humans. So they could do that to them without empathy?
So as you see. Calling human beings non-humans was the start of some very very bad things. So I recommend using another word for it. Because I get what you want to say. But the word non-human is very infected to use your terminology.

I think the trailer is fascinating...

By simply making a small change in context it takes a common video game activity (murdering hundreds of digital people) and turns it into something that a large number of people suddenly have a gut human reaction to. The only thing I see that is new in this trailer is that the people being killed actually show fear and submissiveness... the opposite of typical video game fare where "they had it coming". Maybe it'll wake some people up about the digital activities they subscribe to.

They should publish a deluxe version that hooks an IV into the players arm and feeds them drips of nausea drugs everytime they pull the trigger on someone. Social Conditioning! Just like A Clockwork Orange. But then we'd all turn into a society of lilys who can't bare to defend ourselves. :D

I find the punisher games more violent than this. In that game, I held a guys head to a rhino cage while he screamed and pleaded for his life, and even offered to cooperate. He broke so fast that I had to see how awesome the rhino kill was!

The rhino's horn went in his face :3

Also, I challenge the thread title!

I am offended by this trailer. Not because of the graphic content, but how it goes over the top with the opening monologue. This trivializes what massacre shooters go through by having a hollow delivery and cheesy lines.

Is this reaction more shocking than the trailer? That's a matter of how long you've been on the internet.

The moment we adopt selective positions over which vices or which forms of violence to condone and which to condemn, a slippery slope begins, all previous moral ground is gradually lost. In a society in which various vices and potentially harmful expressions and creations are permissible, someone will inevitably push the envelope past our own personal tolerance levels and tastes. Becoming outraged when our own personal limits are crossed does in fact show our hypocrisy.

A slippery slope of what, expression of ideas in a virtual medium?

These things never translate into the real world in any way beyond discussion of them on their virtual mediums. They can clearly spiral out of control, in fact I helped make 2D assets for a game called CR... but that doesn't promote or condone anything, it was just some edgy button pusher from a friend of mine.

I propose we let virtual mediums (virtual medium defined as any medium that can be used to express a thought that does not manifest in a physical form beyond ink on paper or bytes on a wire) be unregulated. People are too hypocritical and the outliers will skew the limitations if the limit is set by an average of how offended people are.

I like the conclusion there, but the premise is flawed because of the idea that an expression can harm someone :D

I think Louis CK would have some very unkind things to say to people who are so weak they would suffer from another person's idea. He's already made a rib shattering joke about people who are allergic to peanuts haha

Hello thxfoo. If you would spend some time reading at the link I posted it will become clear that not all involved are psychopaths but are so to speak..infected...by their contact with the psychopath and influenced by their manipulations into doing that which they would not normally do. Take for example the veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq who did deeds they would never do if not thrust into a situation by psychopathic manipulation and end up killing themselves because the humanity in them cannot live with their deeds. Cheney OTOH keeps getting his robotic heart repaired and trying to manipulate further transgressions against the human race.

To make it clear to those attempting to manipulate my words into some kind of call for genocide ..well to do so would make me the same as those i rail against. However..quarantining them or informing others as to the nature of their manipulations may "vaccinate" them against egophreniacal infection from association and emulation. Homey don't play genocide. I will kill only in self defense or in defense of innocents or the weaker members of society and only when in imminent danger. I am a dangerous nerd when provoked. It is quite clear that having humanity and empathy is what makes us "human". It is agreed that these creatures are not human by experts..so fire your shots at them. I am only repeating their research and the conclusion they drew from that extensive research. Perhaps they are hybrids and truly not human.

As silly as it is, I think it's a better choice than having him look like Rambo. Or having him look like one of those open carry morons with a machine gun around their shoulder scaring everyone who sees them.

Off topic: Anyone else excited to see what happens when police brutality meets open carry protestors? That's gonna be a massacre shooting of Epic proportions!

This isn't really politically incorrect. Politically incorrect would be if the mass murderer was black and all the people were white. And they said that he was murdering people because they were white. But that's not it. This is morally wrong. It is morally wrong to murder people.

@Tomnnn One, police brutality is just made up. Maybe its real in a couple of officers around America but its not in every single one. Second, are you telling me that you want a giant massacre to happen?

Wow, that trailer was insane in mostly a bad way. The game visuals and general gameplay look astounding. The theme / story on the other hand is unneeded. I can't honestly fathom why some developers want to go that overboard on specific subject matters. I honestly hate to say it but I'd buy Hatred once & if it comes out.

What I believe the developers should do is actually turn the story around into something like "The Punisher" series. This current setup would be the ULTIMATE & perfect recipe for a spiritual successor to punisher. Instead of killing innocents, make the story so that you have to single handedly go into terrorist situations, mob dens, etc and wipe them out. Sure, you can keep the violence and the "hatred" but only kill the bad people in life that actually are destroying mankind.

I'm not talking about excessive force, I'm talking about executions.

The guy who was asked to get his wallet, and was then shot at 4 times when he reached for it.
The man who picked up a BB gun in a walmart (where BB guns were sold) and was, moments later, shot to death by cops. There's also the guy who was beaten by a group of policemen and then sued by them for getting blood on their uniforms. That case is my favorite to cite because it ended with the cops changing their story entirely, so the defense said "You're either admitting to perjury or committing it", the cops said yes, and then nothing. It was handled internally.

I don't need to name grayarea cases where lots of people disagree. There is clear video evidence of these cases. When cops protect the few bad apples, it implies heavily that they're all bad. Why would you keep someone on the force who is so trigger happy that they would shoot first and ask questions later when they're in a building that has guns in it for sale!?

I'm not gonna call escalated force to detain someone police brutality, because in most cases no one is severely injured and that's their training. But you're right. I do want a giant massacre to happen, in Texas, between some "shoot on site" police officers and some open carry supporters.

I'll be very disappointed if both sides don't lost at least 50 people ;)

Both sides are disturbing the peace. Do humanity a favor and let them annihilate one another.

I agree that most of those cases are some of the bad ones. The other side of it though is how many cops are killed? Just yesterday or the day before 4 cops were attacked by a man with a hatchet. Two were wounded and one is in critical condition. You wouldn't say that this heavily implies that all Americans are hatchet wielding people who will kill cops.

I don't think that you fully understand what cops do. They go from house to house to house for 4-6 hours straight only seeing the absolute worst in people. Anyone who does that is guaranteed to become jumpy and twitchy. I'm not saying its an excuse but that it is something that should be taken into account.

Also when you deal with people who would not bat an eye at killing you, you have to maintain a strong outer side. If you exude a "I'm coming home tonight to be with my family no matter what happens" then people will be less likely to try and hurt you. Because they know that you will try your absolute hardest to get home.

The only reason we have peace is because of cops on the streets experiencing the worst so that we can experience the best.

What? What kind of hybrids? Crab-people? Half demons?

This says everything. About these experts and their science. Use your brain and you realize what serious scientists they must be. I brought and bring many points that should make you start thinking about those "experts", I hope the seed is planted.

I get that, but it is about calling 4-8% of man non-human and things like "quarantining" all of them.

Calling 4-8% percent of man non-human is science? Yes sure! Maybe around 1933-1945 it was. But if one says such things about humans today, one could be considered, ... how is the word ..., psychopath maybe?

Why you know all these bad man are psychopaths? Maybe they are just bad man.

Let's say it turns out those are not psychopaths? So we release the 4-8% we quarantined and lock up the other 92-96% of people?

    1) Because for things they did not do until now? All, even those who live a good lifes?
    2) You argue it is science, but measures like that are not science. These are conclusions taken out of ones b###.
    3) You realize that detecting that condition has a huge error factor. Quarantine all even many of them are false positives? E.g. there are people that are too much empathic so that they act strange and maybe wrongly assumed psychopaths. The world is not black and white, and so are psychological conditions.
    4) Social science and psychological results have to be taken with a huge grain of salt (again "quarantining" is no scientific result). Many studies show that up to 50% of studies in those fields cannot be replicated, meaning the results are complete BS.
    5) My BS sensor tingled when looking that those pages you linked. These things do not look like they are consensus in the scientific community, more like some nutjobs doing their own thing.

So you don't play 90% of games around? Because self defense means hiding and calling the police. Maybe you kill the first few attackers, but killing hundreds is never defense.
Oh I forgot, all the guys you kill in these games are non-humans, so you don't kill humans.
Or you never play 90% of games, yes then you stand by your words.

Sorry, I give up. I assumed one could argue rationally. But she seems to ignore the specific points she does not want to hear. I'm not used to that where I live...

Cops should put down sub-human trash who attack first. I know what they go through, I get my news online from as many sources as I can to avoid bias. I only ever reference cases that have evidence or footage. I don't mean to say I know personally from experience lol, but I see a lot of footage of them dealing with all kinds of people. However, what I see in what I cite as police brutality / victims of police executions is indefensible. A man has a BB gun in a walmart where BB guns are sold. No witnesses or footage says he was pointing it at anyone, he just held it at his side while talking on a cellphone and looking for something in an aisle. I don't think anyone would defend their decision to run over there to a barely animate figure with a BB gun and open fire.

We're an intelligent and self aware species, this violence bs needs to stop. If a cop is going to kill someone, the footage better reflect some kind of actual threat. If it doesn't, he should get the electric chair, with sponges, aids, ebola and a spoon stabbed into his kneecap! lol

Anyone remember the entire squad of policemen armed to the teeth taking out a homeless guy? He was packing up his stuff and going to leave as they requested, then someone threw something and there was a bright flash (maybe some kind of stun grenade?), so the guy panic and pulled out a knife. Then the cops all opened fire with automatic weapons. The homeless man is then shot with beanbags and then they let the dog attack because he's being uncooperative, when in reality he's been dead since they shot him.

There's also the recent mess where a man thought he was being robbed, so he went for his gun and when the SWAT team broke into his house, they shot him to death because he had a gun. They SWAT team was sent because some dumbass cops believed the criminal who stole the home owner's car when he said that the guy was a drug dealer. If cops are going to do anything other than generate revenue for funeral homes, they should start by not protecting the bad apples. The rot is spreading in a manor described by @ippdev and it's sickening.

All we can do is hope the violent parties annihilate one another and that one day there might be peace :/

You did not go though the materials I linked. You cannot expect me to take you seriously or engage further in the debate. I don't play games except what I create for clients. I will flat out refuse DOD and defense industry work and will not do shooters, zombie or horror work even if starving. I am 57 years old and no spring chicken and have been around the block dozens of times and schooled ay the University of hard knocks. I have been around some pretty bad characters in my days and have direct experience from which I speak. I spend my non work time researching and reading factual information and geopolitics, news from multiple sources for proper cross referencing of supposed facts looking for congruity, real history, cutting edge science and metaphysics and the odd funny animal video when the other stuff weighs heavy. My own work involves creating interfaces for micro controllers, augmented reality and VR apps, film and video work, holography and large art engineering projects such as this.http://www.buckheadrestaurants.com/images/restaurants/bg_atlanta-fish-market_directions.jpg

I showed you very detailed why I cannot take your sources serious (based on what you say they say). So I don't waste time reading that ..., let's call it stuff. But yes, your previous posts already show that you don't like to address any specific points.

Edit: As I said, I had a short look and my BS sensor went to alarm immediately. My time is to valuable to read more of that if it is immediately clear that it is non-scientific BS masquerading as science.
If you could counter my arguments with something smart I would maybe read more. But it looks like you cannot defend it except just repeating what they state without countering any of the points made.

The only detective shows I've even liked a little bit were those that the criminal(s) were brought swiftly to justice and the vulgar display of suffering and grotesqueness of the criminal's deeds was ignored on film.

What you want is swift, intelligent justice, what you don't want is a show of grotesquery and cruelty for shock effect and (the show / game creators hope) sales for profits.

Warner Brothers Looney Tunes is not the same as the imagery that being pushed to the public now.

And of course I didn't watch that trailer or investigate this 'game'. That's like someone telling you to put your hand over a flame because flames are exciting. No, I think I'll skip that.

When I first zapped into Shield I was impressed. The main protagonist does very very bad things. So the cops are normal humans too. They have good and bad sides, some even very good and some very bad. I hate the stuff where the cops are like angels, the pure good, and the criminals are pure bad; it is boring and only watched because nothing better is on.

At some point we are going to have to address this as a society, there is a line. You can claim that statistics, likely born and funded from organizations that are far too biased, back up the notion that video game violence doesn't translate. But any parent who has ever seen their kids pickup up a controller and then after putting it down immediately start to emulate actions seen, heard or experienced while playing, knows that this is far more complex than a simple casual brush off of non correlation. When you see packs of teens playing and pulling air knives from pretend belt clips and fake stabbing their buddies in the eye in the exact same manner as the latest call of duty, you can't help but call BS on at least some level of this casual dismissal of video game culpability.

Make all the excuses you want but Art and Media have an impact on society. Otherwise what would the point be. We might disagree on the scale and severity but there is SOME influence. You can't argue the point that art should be protected under this faulty prognosis that it has no real discernible impact. You might as well be defending propaganda as senseless and useless because it effects no one and has no actual influence. Make the case for freedom of expression if you want, and you should defend it, but don't blindly pretend this freedom doesn't have a cost in an effort to prevent us from having the conversation that that cost might be too much to bare in some instances.

Those here on these forums know especially that someone spent hours, painstakingly assembling the animation, textures, gore, gibs and screams from the innocent bystanders in this game in an effort to convey what it might actually be like to murder someone who screamed as you did so. The lighting, the music, the aftereffects are all part of an experience meant to transport the player into the world and capture what it may actually feel like to be an actual mass murderer as closely as possible. If the technology to emulate the tactile feel of stabbing a knife into someones face and feeling the squish and splatter of blood on your face was available I have no doubt the author would have included it. It's only going to get more and more realistic from here on out. At some point we push past the uncanny valley and into a space where virtual and reality are indistinguishable. When does this become unhealthy? Its not like gamers are exactly known for their preference for under-indulgence.

So how real do our worlds have to be before we can start questioning the sanity and wisdom of creating games that simulate the most negative and socially destructive themes?

The FBI uses this so called crap science to profile with and do post investigatory work. Whether you wish to believe it or not this is established criminal justice science. Your "points" were straw men you flailed at. I will only address reality and facts in an internet debate and as said prior I will not be dragged down a shuck and jive dead end alley by someone attempting to control the trajectory of a debate with obfuscation and impertinence, but I do find it interesting you are so offended you cannot digest the read before drawing conclusions.

I'll address the issue like this: if you're some lesser evolved human, you should have to pass a test to own anything that contains ideas and never be allowed on the internet.

I've never been affected by games like the punisher or CoD5 on pc (32 vs 32, limbs flying off, goriest COD to date). If people are imitating / picking up influence from call of duty but I'm not, does that mean I'm more evolved than them or that they are less evolved than me? How can you blame the content if it isn't uniformly turning people into mass murderers?

People affected by certain things shouldn't be exposed to them. We should treat these people like people with peanut allergies: DONT GIVE THEM PEANUTS (don't give easily influenced people video games, books, televisions, etc). ;)

"Uncanny valley" lol that's like this field's hottest buzzword. Why not ban dreams then? I've had some unspeakably violent dreams of destruction which were running on the greatest graphics card available: the human brain! I had a dream where I was some 11 ft tall monster with lead bones and iron skin and every step forward I took increased my movement speed, weight, and increased my perception of time to make navigation easier. The increasing weight and speed on each step increases the force applied to anything I came into contact with and the reactions became more violent as the world tried it's best to obey physics.

You can calm yourselves, there were no people in that city. But I woke up after a few hours of that and went on with my day normally. When something is taking place in a virtual space that is not this world, most people (or less than I assumed, apparently) can just shrug off the experience and resume their normal lives.

Do we censor the creators and ban peanuts, or do people with nut allergies nut up and deal with it?

The way I see it is... you can't have it both ways.

In a society that bans drugs yet makes alcohol and cigarettes legal, you have to wonder if too much freedom is a good or bad thing. Lets consider that everything is unmoderated in gaming. That all games are allowed to be as sick as they want. Where does the buck stop? Will we see sexual scenes of any kind in games? porn? horrific child abuse? Where do you wanna stop it?

Filth is filth and imo it's ok to censor something if it won't be a loss to society. In general, I would say torture porn without a point isn't art and has no value, therefore its not a problem if a game like this gets censored so that the majority might be spared from pointless filth.

I agree, you can't ban nuts if a minority of people are allergic. But what if the majority of people were allergic? I think you'll find the majority of people don't like torture porn. They like violence in moderation with a clear cut point to it. In any case this isn't a banning issue but one which needs a lot stronger censorship from what I see. There's been a lot of effort by lobbyists both sides regarding game censorship, and this is one of the best reasons games should be given stronger censorship laws.

I don't mind gore. I like gore sometimes. My games will probably contain blood at some point. But there's limits, and those limits vary from person to person. I prefer to remain around the teenage bracket in terms of gore. So maybe a head can be blown off, maybe a limb can come off. But I can't possibly make an entire game based on that premise of horrific gore on innocents. It's going too far to stomach, especially if that's the actual point of the whole game.

In this case if games continue down this road I'm going to have to support way harsher penalties for selling it to minors, including not allowing it on steam or popular digital stores without clear adult verification.

I guess ultimately what I dislike is the fact you're not a bloodthirsty rambo hero here, but a raging killer of innocents, and that's happened too much in recent memory, in real life, for me to stomach.

Obviously a line needs to be drawn. The question is.. where?

Of course the FBI uses results from psychology and social science about psychopaths.

But "quarantining" and calling non-human 4-8% of man is not part of that science. This is stuff that is extrapolated form that science and confusing the scientific basics and the extrapolations done by some to be the same thing is dangerous.
And I'm sure the FBI does not confuse them (otherwise they would call to for psychological tests, and then mark or imprison all with the condition, since you say that is the conclusion).

Any links to sources that proof that the FBI uses that "Ponerology Science"? No, not normal science about psychopaths, but the things you linked and talk about.
