I just finished watching "The Social Network" and i have to say, movies like these really inspire me to continue programming. I also watched "indie Game: The Movie" Which inspired me to start programming and making games (about 1 year ago). I love watching these movies about programming and i want to know if anybody knows any good movies that inspired you in the terms of programming, like the social network, and indie game the movie did to me?

Anything can be hacked by fast typing, intently staring at a monitor with sweat pouring off your chin.

That movie is more about the personalities of those developers... not so much anything to do with programming.

Yeah, but it shows the progress of these developers.

    Pirates of Silicon Valley?

Other than documentaries, there aren't really any movies that depict anything related to the reality of programming that I'm aware of. You've got silly things like Hackers, Antitrust, Swordfish and so on... plus a few things like Existenz?

Actually, what just came in mind was a comedy on HBO called "Silicon Valley". It's really cool watching him grow as he goes from a shy computer dude. Really funny highly recommend it.

I swear my terminal is tapped. EVERYTIME I have to invoke sudo, an agent is trying to beat down my door. My desk now has more guns on it than my actual armory.

I loved "Indie Game: The Movie". It was very interesting to see what really goes on "behind the scenes" of real indie game makers, with a legit shot at having a big/successful game. I really wish they would do more documentaries like that. They could even keep the exact same format, but follow different game makers.

I really hope they do more game developer movies or documentaries. Unfortunately I think "Indie Game: The Movie" was kind of a niche movie, and so you won't see very many like it :(

    Here's to hoping though.

I don't think this counts as a movie, but the series "Gamer to Game Developer" is a good watch. And anything Quill18 uploads is also worth a watch!

Indeed! For instance, there's this particular dashing and/or handsome guy called Asvarduil who does a weekly livestream that gets saved to YouTube!

Remember, every Sunday, 8:30PM Central time (yes, that means tonight!) you can catch the stream on Twitch! It'll be uploaded to my channel as soon as Twitch finishes exporting it.

There's always Source Code. And, no, unfortunately they don't take a realistic approach with the drama of manual merges, botched commits, uncommented code, or even anything remotely related to programming.

Does it have the grim realism of Hackers though? I swear the first time I watched it I thought it was a documentary.

Honestly, besides Indie Game, I can't think of any movies that inspired me to program. How sad is that?

I remember liking the computer stuff in Jurassic Park when I was younger, although Wayne Knight's portrayal didn't do programmers any favors. I'll always love WarGames as a time capsule view into the awesome technology of the '80s. Seeing old technology in films is a guilty pleasure of mine. Tron is great, been meaning to see the one from 2010 since...well, 2010. Generally it seems you get the Hollywood programmer as either a chain smoking super nerd hunched over a terminal (sometimes with an accent), or as Tom Cruise intensely doodling shapes in the air for the future of humanity. I don't know, I guess I don't find either extreme very inspiring to watch.

Anyway, I work on a computer, so I'm off to zoom and enhance some digital images to try to find out which robot killed my brother.

WarGames was pretty awesome since it demo'ed a working exploit for payphones(which got them sued). Also, Ally Sheedy.

The recent AMC series "Halt and Catch Fire" is brilliant...lots of inspiring coding and hardware building 80's style :)

The "hack" you see in matrix is a real working one. One of very few films that do that.

Fun fact: All coders laugh when in movies passwords are cracked character by character (e.g. wargames "count down"). However, with all the new attacks against SSL that abuse compression (turn compression off on all your (SSL) servers, otherwise you are a fool), it works exactly like that, you guess the secret char by char.

Why wouldn't the matrix run on unix? Although I could see BSD being an option.
