There are some very talented Unity developers/designers/artists and if Unity were to open up a Community blog or online magazine that members of the community could write for.

It could help aspiring developers and work as promotion for the best community developers / designers / artists?

It's a case of seeing if the Unity community builds it. If the community gets something going that runs for 6 months, it'll start getting supported by Unity. If it's running for a year it'll probably get official support etc. I'm not saying that's a guaranteed case, but has more chance of being supported if it's ongoing and successful.

Otherwise the forums and the Unity blog are doing quite well. So it's welcome and encouraged if the community wants to write a magazine.

It's just there's a lot of unity sites out there which don't really lead anywhere as people are seemingly content on this site.

I was thinking that UT could via the community provide a User Blog/Magazine style feature on unit3d.com, allowing guest authors and community members to submit articles/news/reviews/postmortems/game design ect. A way to refine and show off the best of the community?

You know, there is a similar website that does everything from how to market your game to how to make a particle system. It covers many languages, engines, and that sort. Also, if you submit an article, you get paid I believe up to $300 or some big number like that. All these articles come from very successful indie game developers so these are very high quality.

Now if Unity had something similar, but only contained Unity related tutorials / talks written by the community, then that would be awesome!

Hippo has got is spot on here really. Additionally there are plenty of blogging platforms where you can create professional looking sites, couple it with good content and we'll notice you.

If you have already done this, feel free to send us your site.

I often think that a "Asset Store Magazine" would be pretty nice. Since its hard to keep on track with new stuff (only selected stuff reaches the front page). So i usually crawl threw the Asset store section of this forum

    Sounds like good idea.
I set up a website 2 days ago for 2D indie game devs and developers. I would be happy to publish your articles, do interviews and spotlight 2D games made with Unity. I will give full attribution and a link to your site, FB page or game.

Can you be more specific with "community site"? I don't quite understand what you mean.

About all types of unity games along with articles about unity. A 'tip of the week' article, a 'featured game' article and possibly a 'kickstarter spotlight' to help get ks connection.

    I'm interested to start this.
But if it's me alone I don't think the content will break event.

Beside, I may only can contribute article from a non-programmer stand point of view.

... and will Unity Technologies let us use "Unity3D" and their "Watermarks"?

I imagine that website perhaps will goes to commercialisation through advertisement to pay itself, server and writers.

I think we can use the non edited logos on things. I'll buy the domain if someone can get hosting.

I can still add another domain to my shared hosting.
    Not sure if that's enough.
It's enough to run mine though, traffics only around 80-100 per day.

I imagine we will run on WordPress CMS?
That's the best script so far for me.
Have been meddling with other like Joomla but still coming back to WordPress.

Yeah Wordpress would work pretty well for that.
I would imagine plenty of people around here would be willing to write articles...

You might create categories like asset store, modelling, scripting, news, etc.

i'd read a unity magazine... at the moment the unity newsletter i get by email is so kind of ... out of date, by the time i get it it contains stuff pretty much anyone would already know from reading blog posts or visiting the asset store, so there's not much new to it.

Alright, so I'm on board with this thing. If princeWIGUAN would begin this, we could look for a wordpress theme and begin on planning out how it would go. I'm all for this, and this has been said many times, so I think we should just go with it. Again, if no one buys a domain, or if princeWIGUAN doesn't use his extra shared one, I'll buy a domain to begin usage.

I think I can get the domain name.
    And use the shared hosting.

Now, what's the suggestions for domain names?

I see that unity3dcommunity.net is still available.

    2. unitycreator.net <-- should we put "s" behind?

I really just think UnityCreator sounds more official and nicer on the tongue, too. Another guy from here whom I asked about the name said so, also(aaro4130).

You folks realise that stuff like hosting and domain names is by far the easiest part of setting something like this up, right?

What is the content going to be?

I have some articles I would like to write to begin. Others would just be submitting articles and joining in. I can read submissions and fix any grammatical/factual issues if needed and then put it up.

Well, I would like to write an article one effective puzzle design. I also would like to write an article on effectively 'teaching' the player about how to use the gameplay mechanics. And an article on lighting in Unity, as I've got a fairly well-rounded hand on that.

I can also help out with technical stuff (got a 48gb root, 8core, 40 gb ssd, 1 gbit/s unmetered). I also have much Linux knowledge. Not sure if you need that through.

Good luck with this, you may also want to setup a twitter account so people can post things of interest.

My idea was to sift the forums for potential 'gems' or articles by some of the most talented people using Unity.

It will be a lot of work though, almost a full time job in itself, to do it well.

Maybe someone should create a thread with a poll to see if there is enough interest and enough people willing to contribute material.

I think the problem was not enough bought the old magazine, doing another one would be a waste of time IMHO. There were a few guys doing a weekly podcast, not sure if thats still going
