I would ask this at SO, but it would be closed as not constructive in about 10 seconds...

What books would you say are fundamental, required readings of game development and design for someone who is self-taught?

I come from a programming background. So books like Rapid Development, The Mythical Man-Month, CODE, Joel on Software - these are all widely considered fundamentals in the field of computer science/software development. I am not looking to start a "this book is better than the other" type thread - but I'd like some input on what is considered critical reading for those starting in game development.

    Thanks!
