PolyCopRiotNode is an ongoing augmented reality piece, by Chicago-based artists Channel TWo, that previously employed WebAR and Layar. Over the last two months, it was rebuilt in Unity and is now available on Google Play™ and App Store™

PolyCopRiotNode is a site specific work that has been exhibited in Washington, DC; Chicago, IL and Cleveland, OH. As part of the 2013 "Cyber In Securities" exhibition in DC, instances of virtual riot police marked places where real police had invaded the homes of innocent people based on erroneous information.

For the exhibit opening August 1 at Storefront gallery in Portland, OR, Channel TWo researched public spaces in Portland that were used as meet up points or sites for protest and dissent. These include Portland City Hall, the US District Court, Waterfront Park Trail, and Lownsdale and Chapman Squares, a site of Occupy Portland.

The Android version of PolyCopRiotNode can be downloaded from the Google Play™ store.

    Technical & Credit:
polyCopRiotNode uses Vuforia (for the AR camera only) and Gallery Screenshot. Perry Hoberman's iPhone gyroscope-controlled camera demo v0.3 8/8/11 was vital to getting a camera working with the gyroscope (for Android and iOS). Also very helpful was Hayden Scott-Baron (Dock)'s CSVReader tutorial.
The Unity version of this piece was only possible due to the fantastic network of support and example code from Unity's user-base posting on the forums and stackoverflow, thank you all.

note: as part of the concept of the piece, you can only view the models if you are within a city and at one of the geo-fence locations shown on the map. However, because of the demands of Apple's review, there is a way to see the models anywhere on the iOS version. Email everybody@onchanneltwo.com if you're interested.

    Hey! One question.
So, the camera that used the gyroscope, did it use the compass too?
