Silo is an excellent modeler with a very workable interface. It's only $99.

If you look around you can find a magazine with Carrara 7 Pro on the cover disc. It's got some decent modeling capabilities.

I second Wings3D. I change the camera controls to Maya style in the settings, which makes it easier to use. Right-click context-sensitive menus are excellent.

Does the restriction hold for the demo version? because you could just learn from the student version then model and export on the demo version. It's sly but a good career path in the end if you learn the big packages.

Yes - the demo is non-commercial as well. You don't expect a company like Autodest to make it THAT easy for you, do you? ;)

Google Sketchup. Wings3D. For higher res sculpting there's Sculptris. If you're a student you can get free access to any of the Autodesk lineup (Max, Maya, XSI and so on). If proceduralism is your thing then Houdini also offers a free version, though it's not exactly what I'd call an intuitive modeler even if it's extremely powerful.

Tonnes of good options out there to suit everyone.

How about free rigging/animation software? Wings/Sketchup can't do any of that, and most software I've tried that does animation has no regard for the health of my brain.
