Road Network Generator now ready for release! -- Click Here to Download -- Price is $25 indie and $50 commercial Demonstration video is here: (updated to v1.1 4/25/11) Examples of road types available in the generator: Purchase includes all future updates. If you have any questions please ask! *EDIT: updated to include new video 4.25.11
simple answer - yes. like, right now, coincidentally, I need somethign like this for my current project XD will it be free? or will this be commercial (I wouldn't be surprised )
Sorry, it will be commercial, but cheap, around $25 for indies. I'm planning to include a few types of roads though, like medieval, futuristic and if anyone has other suggestions?
If this could be done ingame, it would be awesome for a Sim City like game. Would it be pssible to use custom models?
cool! I like this, might I suggest some lower poly road types aswell with right angles instead of round corners
Looks very useful. This, and also: - Will there be support for roads which aren't at 90 degree angles? e.g. curved roads - Can the segments be optimised so they aren't as smooth but have less polygons?
yes: - Will there be support for roads which aren't at 90 degree angles?... 30 degrees, 33 degrees? great work!!
@24pfilms: Currently it does not deform over terrain, so it remains flat. I will look into what that will take to make it deform over terrain. @clandestine: Currently the roads are just 90 degrees, but I can experiment with adding more angles. @quickfingers: I will incorporate a higher poly and a lower poly, if there is interest. And I left out sharp angles corners because driving on them, is not very practical, at least in my tests. Great suggestions, guys, I will look at them.
Thanks Jeff. I explored the possibility of adding to terrain, but there's not enough vertices in the road meshes to properly deform over terrain. Rather than add more vertices to the road mesh, I chose to leave that out (for now at least). You can always use the "set terrain height" tool to flatten the terrain for placement of the road network.
Right now it does not. I'm exploring a way to do this, and potentially deform over terrain, but I don't want to increase the poly count by too much, and that would need to happen to get a nice smooth slope. @Chaoss: I made edges for the roads meeting the sidewalk and will push out the update today or tomorrow. All current customers will be sent a download link.
Road geometry has been changed to include edges where the sidewalks intersect them. Download links have been sent to all current customers. Any other suggestions welcome!
Flatten Roads to terrain is working, though I may have to do some terrain smoothing before flattening:
@Disaldo, check your PMs Smooth terrain is working now, and the road conforms to the terrain. Though road geometry had to increase for this. I'll push out the update in the next few days:
This could be impossible, but curving roads (rather than grid layout) would be good, even slightly diagonal roads would make it appear more realistic
I agree, I am looking for ways to do this. The problem is generating intersections for the infinite number of angles that can happen with curved roads. This is why you see none of the available spline road tools with intersections. I want to find some time to tackle this and I have a pretty good idea how; just need the time.
Version 1.1 released! Includes flattening roads to terrain and smoothing terrain below the road. The Interface has also been improved.
How soon before this can do curved roads at angles? Also whats the difference between pro and indy license functionalty?
The functionality between the two versions is the same, there is a cheaper price for independent developers. There is no timetable on large curved roads at this time, sorry.
Surely it cant be that hard to extend this to have curved and diagonal roads from different angles? Theres just not much use for a grid of roads in a realistic terrain...
Any plans for getting this working with Map-ity? It would be great if it could take input from Map-ity to create the mask that is used for generating roads.
