I'd like to show you what I've been working on. It's not really a game, but it certainly uses Unity.

I have been trying to find ways to get rid of the standard one-page-at-a-time website designs. So first I made a setup with various webpages ordered and displayed in a 3D space, where the user can manouvre freely. Have a look at http://backend.orbcreation.com/orb3dbuild

But this was still a website where people just visit, look something up, and disappear. Wouldn't it be much cooler if website visitors could actually see each other and communicate? Also, imagine a company with a receptionist. The receptionist welcomes visitors, answers calls and answers emails, but he doesn't have any notion of the hundreds of people that visited the company's website. With Unity, he could welcome people, answer questions, help them find their way.

Well that's the theory. I don't know if it will really work that way. If not, I have had a great time developing it. :D

all i can say is, "incredible!", I like how the quick accessibility is not hampered by the trivial walking around. I can get straight to the point if i prefer by using the links at the bottom.

I remember you showing that project to me at Unite, glad to see you kept working on it!

It's good to see something like that come out; virtual worlds like second life can display web content but they are somewhat complex to use, clouded by an advanced avatar pimping system and require a stand-alone software... all things that I'm glad to see you have left out to focus the interactions around the act of browsing web content.

I wonder how well it could integrate with blogs and other news feeds.

Thanks for the amazing replies :)
Yesterday the website was visited by over a hundred people just because i dropped the link in this forum. That was so cool. You could see visitors walking around, I chatted with some of you. And got some good advice and some ideas too. 2 people even offered help. It was just great!

My next step is to find some companies that are willing to give this a shot. And first Google needs to be able to find me. So if you could include a link in your website somewhere I'd be eternally grateful. Or if you have some tips..?

I hope this does not become popular. Using unity for websites when half the time it crashes firefox is terrible.

Well I think if it becomes popular they'll solve these problems.
By the way, I have the Unity plugin crashing Chrome very often, Opera never crashes it instead.

    Great work Richard,
I think the commercial potential for web only based online businesses to have a virtual "brick and mortar" building where clients can visit and interact with staff would create a totally different and personal experience for the client than visiting a standard website with a bit of text.

The web based business could also have any building design they want and tailor make that impression an feel with the 3d environment they decide upon. A lot of potential here.

Not too crazy about the first one but the second one would be absolutely amazing for consumer interactions and such! People could have that as a part of their business website, "The lounge" or something.

Wow. Is this still a project you are working on? If so PLEASE message me. The company I am working for is looking to try something like this. I would love to chat with you and talk specifics in private. If you'd like, you can visit our website at Bullfighterdesign.com just to get a feel for what we do. I hope to hear from you soon.

    Best regards

Sorry folks. the links indeed do not work anymore. The whole site has been moved to orbcreation.com. A new version is in the pipeline now that Unity has announced to support WebGL soon.
