After the release of my last game, ShadowRoom, on Kongregate, I decided to pickup on my failed attempt to complete a car tutorial. Here's how it turned out:

    PLAY ON KONGREGATE

    Currently Includes:
    -Vehicle Physics
    -Machinegun (with overheating)
    -Rocket Launcher
    -Ammo Pickups
    -Lights
    -Terrain
    -Basic Enemies
    -Exploding Enemies
    -Acid Spitting Enemies
    -Huge Enemies
    -Enemy Spawner
    -Kill Counter
    -Simple Particle Effects
    -Basic HUD

    To Do's:
    -More weapons
    -Improve and Add Enemies
    -Objectives

If everything goes well with this game, I might have myself a second entry in the Kongregate competition.

Please tell me what you think, especially about the use of lighting and the way the tank aims.

And here are some exciting images:

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Question: Is it too dark? Should I make the Ambient light brighter, increase the angle of the spotlight?

Lookin good. Those critters are relentless. :)

I kind of got turned around a couple time, lost track of which was the front of the vehicle. Some some simple landmarks or other objects on the terrain would add a lot - make ya feel like you were going somewhere

Very cool :) 126 kills, but i noticed that my car doesnt take damage :p

The exploding spiders is a good idea, it is fun when i manage to gather normal spiders around them, then shoot :D

dude that game is freaking scray! bugs f**k you up if you arnt careful.
Few points though, gun just seems lacking, needs sound or some more powerful looking fxs, some recoil would be good to, just add a move tank so many places opposing to the direction of the gun when fired, and a push back weapons would be great, maybe on a long recharge or something mate.

You're right about the Machinegun, I'm looking for sounds at the moment. The push back weapon is a good idea too. I'll see what I can do...

I love it! It's got a zombie kind of feel, sort of difficult to play, but maybe thats part of the challenge. looking forward to updates!

Added some sounds. Some are most likely going to be replaced.

One of the things I wanted to try with this game was instead of the turret just rotating along one axis to face the direction of the mouse, having it face the mouse's position on the terrain. So instead of shooting in a direction, it shoots at a particular point (that white circle).

When the gun aims at the mouse position it makes the kill feel more satisfying. Point, Aim and shoot is the way to go. Or you can use directional aiming as an easy setting and the point and shoot as a normal setting.

    Update 9/2/11

Hit the gas, now you can ram them.

    Added:
    -Ability to ram
-Added barriers to the edge of the map
    -Capped the bug spawning

Also, I don't want to sound impatient, but there seems to be a lack of activity from people who aren't me. Is no-one interested? No-one's got any ideas? No one wants to know how I made something work?

    Hi,
Overall great game. Nice job. Bugs are scary, car handles fine, tension builds up nicely, ... But it seems to me the bugs could use some AI. If you add some objects to the scene like walls (or something fits yours concept better) and have the more intelligent bugs (not all) do a little path finding, the game would become more chalangeing. Plus you should use separation and cohesion to simulate floks of bugs. Now you can easily predict where a bug is heading. I've just finished my tower defence in which you create your own game area. The characters use A* to navigate. Mine stille has a few bugs, and it doesn't look as great as yours, but you get the idea. Check it out: boi.webuda.com. Also maybe you could implement missions like save some people or kill the queen bug or something. Finally, I think you should use a "director" like L4D has to spawn enemies. That way you could give the player a more intense gaming experience.

Glad you liked my game, Boi, and thanks for the input, I am planning on adding some objectives very soon. I'll also see what I can come up with in the AI department.

    Update 14/2/11

    Just a little one.

    Changed:
-Tweaked Spitter AI a bit, they should now spit acid infront of you instead of at you.
-Reduced the amount of health gained from pickups.

I'm also going to be uploading to Kongregate soon.

    Hey guys!

I've been playing around with Kongregate Statistics and have added two achievments and a Kills statistic, but I still need it to be tested, and thats where you come in.

If you wouldn't mind, head over to Kongregate and give them a shot.
    Achievements:
Swarmed - Been killed by the swarm.
Road Rage - Killed 100 enemies by ramming them.

PS: Would you kindly* rate the game? I'm still under judgement.

    *Bioshock reference.

Nice game. The variety of enemies made it pretty fun and re-playable. I have some suggestions and comments:

    - The car/tank often loses control when driving on bumps. A bit more stability and shock absorber springiness perhaps?
    - The car/tank looks a bit too grey and bland, some textures, glowy shiny spots might make it stand out a bit more.
    - The seamless terrain has a few hard creases here and there (you probably already know this)
    - Definitely need more pickups and maybe even a light to show where the pickups are
    - A minimap would be splendid

    Keep up the good work.

It's acutally a subluminal message trying to get people to drive safely. Alright, it isn't. I do think it also acts as a deterent from just driving away from the swarm, seeing as you have to keep your control over the APC in check.

Perhaps. Keep in mind that is is my first fully textured model.

I blame quickfingers! Joking, he's a great guy. But yeah, the seams in the terrain was in the original infinite terrain engine I got. The spotlight does bing more attention to it aswell.

True, but the pickup was just a quick throw in to make a source of ammo for the rocket launcher.

    a) There's no real objective but to survive, and the Swarm mostly forms up behind you. It also make the explosive spiders more dangerous when they spawn infront of you.
    b) I'm not that smart. :(

Thank you. If you don't know already, I'm not continuing this project. It was a last ditch attempt to get something in the Kongregate competition. Sure, I falied, but it was fun to make, and I learned some new things.
    That's 2 out of 3, so I think I did alright.

    Great game!
The music works perfectly with it, the tank handles great, its alot of fun!
Only suggestions, maybe add some detail to the terrain (rocks and such, or even some varying texture)
I also think that there should be a counter showing how many creatures you killed (for a sense of achievment and to compare wiht others)
The tank's texture could use some more detail,
    otherwise its great!
