Can I ask what you are using to do the drawing of the nodes and connections etc, is that a lib available from somewhere or is it all custom coded stuff?

YEAH !!!! I was wondering if this feature was inside Vizio ... it's the case now !!! Do you have a short cut to create it ??? It was right click when poinetr on a variable select copy then wether Ctrl + Shift + V or right clic and in the context menu paste as shortcut. If i remember well ... Is there a context menu when right clicking in vizio or some short cut keys ??? ( sorry didn't have time to go on Vizio forum for the moment. Nice job !!!!

Hey Neodrop is vizio aimed at people who can code or have a strong coding experience.. i guess im trying to ask how much knowledge would i need to learn/have in order to start making stuff with your program. "Playmaker" is another visual scripting program that looks like yours but is focused on simplicity and a easy learning curve. their motto is "realize your creative vision without knowing how to program!" i personally tried the beta and you can make alot of stuff within a day or so of learning. But honestly your program looks stronger/more features ..im just a little uncertain about the learning curve(maybe it's just because i haven't tried yours yet, im going to wait for the open beta to make a decision on which one to buy)

Well, as I see, our entering level is a bit higher than in Playmaker, but our possibilities are limited only by your experience and imagination.
In two words : Universe (VIZIO) can be used for full production cycle from concept to finished game of any complexity level in any supported by Unity platforms. It's deep, flaxible, fast and have no limits.
I'll ask our beta-testers to answer you more detailed, cose my opinion can't be crystal clear in this question ;)

And, btw, our closed test is not so hard closed. Fill free to join as if you wish to make your comparison now. Just find me in Skype.

Thanks neodrop . I'll contact you in skype in a day or so..but i already know that you have me sold :) .. true playmaker is simpler but im really focused on investing in gameplay ..so i'll just read all of your tutorials and documentation (im not completely bad at code.. im a college student just starting to learn c# and java so this is a little overwhelming but i know vizio will pay off in the long run)

It's easy to add any new functionality in our Universe. I think, it can do anybody. What about us (Universe team), right now we haven't a free time to do it quickly, but we will do it, when will find a bit free time for such work.

Playmaker and this are very different beasts, beyond both using node based GUI.

Playmaker is a finite state machine, not a complete scripting system, but is very well suited to those who don't really understand scripting (like me!). While this is basically full on scripting but in node based form. So to anyone with little knowledge of scripting, this would still be difficult to understand.

If you know your coding, buying both is still very desirable as neither really competes with the other, as both offer something different and to different types of user and using both, depending on the situation is quite doable.

For example, if you wanted to use states, you'd have to script the system to do it in this, while Playmaker is all done for you. But if you wanted to write a complex extension like your own shader editor, you could use this, but not Playmaker.

Playmaker is very limiting. I don't always want to have to do a finite state machine with everything I try and do. Vizio is much more powerful and flexible.

Playmaker is not very limiting, it does exactly what it's made to do. Nobody said you have, or should, use it for everything either.

Playmaker looks somewhat interesting but doesn't seem to facilitate things for me compared to doing actual scripting. I'm still eagerly waiting for vizio to be ready for testing to the general public and see how it works.

"it does exactly what it's made to do"... Sounds like the definition of limiting to me. You can expand Vizio as much as you want and make it do what it is not made to do...

Playmaker was made with one specific goal in mind, to be a simple to use finite state machine aimed at people with little to no knowledge of scripting. I don't know why you're being so hostile towards it when it targets a completely different audience to the thing in this thread. Unless you're like, I dunno, jealous or something, but surely not?

I want to spell out the reason I'm interested in node based programming.

I'd like to differ "scripting" from "node programming" as the first being 1D, and the later 2D.

I've noticed when dealing with scripting I tend to resort to my shape recognition skill to find the 'area' i'm trying to fixing/modify. Why don't I just read the code? That's because I'm more of a visual person, and I while reading would take me certain time to go through the code, shapes can be spotted in a SNAP, and I believe this is the same for many other people!

Also, when thinking/reasoning, I don't think I do it in a single dimension, as humans see in 3D, which in is just a 'sensation' of depth our brain generates for us with a set of two 2d images from each one of our eyes. Hence if you cover one of your eyes the sense of depth is lost! All in all a 2D layout for our 'logic' certainly seems to be more in sync with how our brains might work.

When scripting we're bound to scroll up down (1 axis) to find what we're looking for, and to find it we simply read what's on our code, and we use the aid of commenting to help us guide ourselves in that sea of code lines. While this is fine and 'smart people' get along perfectly fine with the whole coding scenario, I'm not one of those super smart fellows, so I self-proclaim myself a "gamedev artist" (aka not that smart coder), and I'm more inclined to solutions like vizio is offering right now!

When it comes to playmaker, 1st impression is it does a great job providing a node-based alternative to scripting, but I wasn't 100% in sync with its logic! I got used to certain ways of doing things in unity, and playmaker seems to want to change that quite a bit, so I feel that playmaker wants to take me to a whole different route. I'm eager to see what vizio is all about, hopefully it'll be more integrated with unity!
