I'm not sure if this is good enough for the gallery, but here's an updated image from my widget. I added the widget surround after the competition finished, which is why it isn't in that version.

The main camera is on layer 0 and the 2 subviews are on layer 1. Then I just scaled the subviews in the inspector. You can also set the layers in the inspector.

The tree shadows are all projections? That's looking very nice! I love how it falls through the foliage... Did this have to do with the "alpha test" question you posted in the ShaderLab threads? Great lighting that adds a softness over the whole thing.

    Keep it up man!

This is me in the process of teaching myself Maya and Unity of course. Everything I made started from a primative. It's kind of messy since I didn't realy have a plan to what I was doing, except just trying to make something. I'll have a short web player soon.

    Thanks everyone!

Looks nice, but I hate lens flares(in certain cases), so overdone! Esp in stuff like First Person Shooters, I mean, how often do you see a lens flare with your eyes? (I can however understand it more if your character has a visor or something, ala Metroid Prime for example).

Then again, if it is meant to be a camera, then I'm all for it.

The main problem with lens flares is that we only have 2, and they are both programmer art.

Unity has EXTREMELY configurable lens flares, so if anyone wants to make more subtle ones, we'll be happy to ship them as part of the standard assets.

@rasmus: As for whether they are realistic or not, I agree they aren't - the thing is that we're trying to create an impression of something that is VERY bright - when was the last time you saw a game where the sun was so bright it hurt your eyes?

With accurate HDRI rendering you could actually be blinded by your monitor! Of course such a mythical monitor would use insane amounts of power and heat your house.

Very nice screenshots! The one with the bridge reminds me of the waterboatscene in the middle of HL2 (i think it's due to the water and the distance) where you have to do the great jump over the dam. :O)

Wow! Did you use a layered shader for that terrain or is that just one big texture?

    Looks great!

(Gray shows when Safari failed to receive the whole image. Hit Reload, or Shift-Reload if that fails, or open the image in a new tab and Reload there.)

I probably should put this in a different thread, but a lot of people have asked me about this.

This is how I made this island:

(The texture size is currently 2048x2048)

Thanks for the "mini-tutorial". What was the resolution of the terrain mesh out of Lightwave? Did you do any mesh optimizing or is it a straight grid?

Reznic getting it done! Looks very nice. So a big ol' 2048 texture, did you just do a planar projection onto the whole terrain for this? You mention "extra details" so are you blending them in using the "LayerShader" from the WIKI?

Reznic, did you ever make maps for Myth or Myth II from Bungie? The process you used to make your mesh is nearly identical to the process use with the editors for the Myth series. It looks awesome by the way, and you've made it look so easy. I tried making meshes for Myth and it never turned out very well... it's a lot harder than one might think.

The mesh started out as a flat plane about 60x60. In Lightwave, I used the SubPatch tool, applied the displacement map and wound up with 28,800 triangles. I will be seriously optimizing this soon, perhaps re-creating the model.

Currently I'm using a single texture (to texture blending or anything like that yet). The texture is being applied as a UV ,not planar projection (although, the UV map is simply a top down view).

This is just preliminary screenshot. I still have a lot of work to do.

Hmm...no screenshots in a while, eh? Here's a few, then:

    1) A tree.
    2) The tree, on a hill, with (moving, dual-layer, shadow-casting) clouds.
    3) Several trees, with vegetation provided by my Veg-O-Tron 3000: "Virtually all the precision and control of placing thousands of plants by hand, but none of the indescribable mind-numbing agony! Plant an entire hillside with a variety of vegetation in minutes!"

Yep, can't wait for 1.5.1 and that mesh combining script. ;) Though it still manages about 40 fps there anyway, somehow. (Must be my dual 2.5GHz G5 + X800.) Some sort of LOD system would be useful too I imagine, even with mesh combining, considering the view distance.

Sadly, none of this is from either of my games in progress. The terrain mesh is, sort of, though the texturing is unfinished. I was looking at it, thinking "gee, that's kinda barren, maybe I'll try my hand at making a tree"...and then I got distracted. Darn you, Unity, for making experimentation so easy! ;) Though I've had an idea for a game for a while now, which something like this would be useful for. Maybe later then.

Woohoo... this gets really interesting. Well done Eric!

So, tell us more about your Veg-O-Tron... if you like. Does it concentrate on creating plants or is it possible to throw in some rocks or other objects as well? I am really interested in that thingie!
