I tried loading my project and scene and this icon came up.
    $Capture.PNG

When i try pressing these options none of them work (neither load default or revert factory). This only occurs in the project i'm trying to work on. If i load a different one or make a new one it doesn't do it. Anyone know what to do because I want to keep working on my game.

Fixed this by creating a new project and importing all my assets into it.

I have the same issue, however it's when I try and start the editor. There's no way out of it. Clicking button eventually leads the program to close.

    1. Open Unity.
    2. Open Unity Again. (don't close last error, leave it up).
    3. It will say Unity is already in use or whatever.
    4. Open a new or existing project.
    5. Re-import your last project, which is the one that in my case closed by a power failure.

Now I have solution for this problem. You have to use higher version of unity to come out of this error.

At present your project initially created in higher version and same project you are trying to opening it on lower version compare to you have created.

    These steps worked for me:

    1. Find your project's root folder
    2. Backup (Copy/Paste) your Project Settings file somewhere else. I just dragged mine to my desktop. It's a good idea to backup the entire project at this point too.
    3. Delete the Project Settings folder from your project
    4. Open the project
    5. Right click the Assets folder in the Project window
    6. 'Reimport All'
    7. Go to the root folder again
    8. Delete the Project Settings folder again
    9. Paste your old project settings into the root folder

Remember to always backup your work!

I found the problem as well as a solution.
I checked the folder that contained my project and found out it belong to root so I Unity3d could not access it, just change the permissions of the folder.

My solution was to change where I was creating project. The folder I was using had all permissions and was not read only, but it didn't work. So I just used a different folder on my other drive.

Та же проблема. Помогло копирование содержимого из папки ProjectSettings рабочего проекта в ту же папку нерабочего.
The same problem. Copying content of ProjectSettings folder from working project to the same folder of non working worked for me.

I got the same issue with the latest Unity 5.6, and rebooting my Windows 10 fixed the issue.

    Resolved IT
    Create a new Project
go to the file location and copy
    'project'/Library/CurrentLayout-default.dwlt
Paste this file into your original projects ...librarry/... path
    It worked for me.

I get the same Error, but when creating a new project. I completely removed Unity and reinstalled. It fixed the problem for three days, then it happened again. Once it happens, I can't even open some of my old projects.

Edit: My solution only worked one time for me. Pochy's solution in the post below is the actual solution.

Thanks for this thread. This happened to me when creating a new project with 2020.1.5f1.

What worked for me: Close Unity, delete the Library folder in he new project folder, and then restart Unity.

I just had this error creating a new project. Seems that changing my project name from "Whale_test" to "Whale Test" resolved the issue. Could it be some kind of pathname parsing kind of bug ?

    Issue still exists in 2020.1.6f1.
I use this method from POCHY:

    1. Go to (for Win10) ...\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Unity\Editor-5.x\Preferences\Layouts\default
    2. Open Default.wlp with Notepad or any text editor
    3. Go to your new project's folder -> subfolder ...\Library
    4. Open CurrentLayout-default.dwlt with Notepad or any text editor, clear all and paste Default.wlp contents instead. Save and close.
(Alternatively, you can copy and paste Default.wlp and rename it into CurrentLayout-default.dwlt but make sure .wlp changes to .dwlt)
    5. Run your project now. Should be fine.

UNITY has not fixed the issue for years, as seen in the forum. Pathetic.

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but this happens to me all the time.

    What I did was

    1. Find the `CurrentLayout.dwlt` (Currently in Windows it's in your project root/Library).
    2. Delete `CurrentLayout.dwlt` (Could be called CurrentLayout-default.dwlt, delete any of these).
    3. While your windows explorer (or finder on mac) is open, Open your project. You will still get the error.
    4. Click "Load Default Layout". This will not solve the issue yet. Back in your Explorer/Finder, Unity will have placed a new `CurrentLayout-default.dwlt`
    5. Move that new `CurrentLayout-default.dwlt` file to another folder like Desktop temporarily
    6. Click "Quit". Make sure Unity didn't add that file again
    7. Copy the desktop file back into this folder
    8. Open your project.
Yes, you lose your layout settings and that's a huge PITA, but you won't have to make new projects every time or whatever else you had to do.

The only thing that helped me against this annoying bug was this:
    1. Open "Help" --> "Check for updates" in the editor menu bar
    2. Deactivate the checkbox "Check for Updates"
