The royalty used to be 25% iirc. That's a pretty big change.

Wow.....that's amazing. Screw paying $225/mo for a subscription to unity + 2 mobile licenses.

At that price I can't not sign up and give it a serious consideration....

Jaws dropping... Information overload today, I feel like a kid on christmas! What to do, what to do... feels like some adjustments to Unity's pricing in the future wouldn't be too far fetched...?

No wonder Unity leaked all this Unity 5 info before 4.4, 4.5, and 4.6 have even been mentioned. This Unreal4 is a huge game changer. It's not UDK vs. Unity anymore.......omg unreal4....

I'm definitely going to go with Unreal4 for oculus development.....

No catch. 5% of revenue from sales (nothing most people give a moneys about)

    • [h=4]Do I have to worry about a billing contract or penalties for cancelling my subscription?[/h]Your subscription payment automatically recurs, but you’re free to cancel at any time. There’s no penalty for cancellation.
When you cancel your subscription, you won’t receive access to future releases of Unreal Engine 4, however your login will remain active, and you are free to continue using the versions of Unreal Engine 4 which you obtained as a subscriber under the terms of the EULA.

So you can just pay 19 dollars and cancel to use it as much as you like for testing purposes. It has thrown a spanner into the works for Unity, but this is business and I don't think it's entirely cut and dried for us just yet. Plenty of time to look at things.

regarding the announcment today, deploy to webgl would cost extra in unity.. this is very, very tempting.

Relax everybody.....it doesn't have realtime GI.

(they used to have it in previous private builds, but it was not polished enough)

I have to admit, you don't see licensing terms like that very often.

And only slightly more expensive than my wife's Pay As You Go SIM. (ah, no, it's cheaper lol) :p

You're talking about the real time voxel cone tracing alg they tried to implement but couldn't with decent performance, Enlighten uses radiosity bounces while quick isn't quite on the same level of quality as cone tracing.. Shame really.

I knew this would be on the top of the forums... I guess Unity may be in serious trouble now?!
Epic just sent a newsletter about this to my email (I don’t even use UE).

Wow, didnt expect them to do that move.

If UE4 is more user friendly then they have just checkmated Unity.

They have a marketplace, looks like it's brand new but they have a lot of free example projects and probably more to come!

Looking forward to see If this "Designers can build code-free games using Blueprint visual scripting" beats Playmaker + Unity combo.

I'm still in shock, this is a blindside right hook. I wonder what Unity think to this??

They released the full engine code? WTH?

    Well, isn't this nice.

I bought and activated pro less than 24 hours ago. In a sense, I feel like I have been raped.

For me the only thing Unity still has going for it over Unreal engine 4 is Houdini engine support. However I suspect that will soon change.

We obviously won't even consider switching over for existing projects, and it would likely be difficult to sell clients on the idea of a 5% gross revenue fee - but for our next first party project we may very well consider this.

I'm getting sick to death of not having the ability to fix half baked features myself in Unity. Mecanim would be so much better if we had source access could aggressively address it's shortcomings. Yay, we're finally getting enter/exit nodes years later and gated behind another upgrade fee!

That ... is an unexpected aggressive move into the mass market on Epic's behalf. I can say with absolute certainty, that I did not expect this. At all.

I guess this shows how much Unity was able to penetrate the mass market up to this point. Honestly I am much more interested how Crytek will respond to this, though. From the three best known Engines on the market right now they are in the weakest licensing position, right now.

Get it right, that was voxel cone tracing. That's nothing to do with enlighten, and both UE4 and Unity 4 are still capable of voxel cone tracing. It's a pointless short-sighted feature to come out of the box.

Enlighten is integrated into UE4 as well as Unity 5. They have comparable feature sets.

    Full C++ source access
$20 month, you can cancel, use it for a year and resubscribe if you wish
    Has an asset store too
Windows, IOS, Mac, Android support all inside

    Wow, just wow.

I've used UDK during the rapid update season, if that is any indication, the engine will be improved in an unprecedented rate as well. Not to sound overly dramatic, but, if Unity doesn't take action, this will kill them in the long run.

I have subs knowing that I'd get the Unity upgrade, it's not exactly a nice way to do business really is it. I know why they did it, I don't agree with it..

Well, i'm still ALL IN for Unity... but they can't expect me to be willing to pay monthly "as lowly as 254$", when UE4 is at 19$ + 5%. And with Unreal i can cancel my subscription at any time without any penalty.

It is always a bit sickening looking at the Unity upgrade page and seeing all of the Android/iOS upgrades as seperate purchases. It stops me from upgrading. If it was $600 to upgrade them all I may have done it by now. And I've never understood Unity's subscription plan where you're locked into 12-months. Kind of defeats the point.

I will definitely subscribe to UE4 for 1 month to try it out, even though I've never programmed with it.

i wouldn't mind staying with unity. payed the update yesterday with the hope to deploy to webgl in the future. i cannot do this, as it will me cost extra. unity always stated, they stay behind web 100%. now i have to pay extra for it and unreal gives me the option to do it with the package.
i really like unity. worked with it for years now. but this decision is sooo bad and unreal put the finger right in it..

I just logged in after a while to start this thread and say exactly this.

I think Unity should one-up this.

Package 1) Everything Unity offers for $19.99 a month and a 5% royalty fee
Package 2) Everything Unity offers for $75 a month and 0% royalty fee

Competition is always good. I won't leave Unity but I could use this for a future more ambitious project.
