Freshly announced from the developer day at GDC, Unity 5.0 is coming. Unity 5.0 Pro is available for pre-order here! Those who pre-order will have instant access to every 4.x Pro build.

So, what are some of the things we’ve got in the 5.0 bundle of joy?

    • Physically-based shading
    • Improved workflow efficiency by our new unified shader architecture
    • Real-time lightmap previews
    • Real-time Global Illumination with Enlighten
    • Mecanim StateMachine Behaviours
    • A completely overhauled audio system
    • New Audio Mixer
    • Unity is now 64-bit
    • New multithreaded job scheduler
    • NVIDIA PhysX 3.3
    • Easier and incremental building of Asset Bundles
    • New 2D physics effectors
    • SpeedTree Integration
    • NavMesh improvements
    • Loading optimizations

Another addition to the 5.0 familly will be early access to the WebGL add-on, we’ve been collaborating with Mozilla to bring WebGL and asm.js support to Unity. If you’re at GDC, come check out Dead Trigger 2 by Madfinger Games running on WebGL.

Unity 5 will also see the launch of Unity Cloud, our integrated cross promotion platform. Through Unity Cloud you can run full screen interstitial ads on your mobile games and exchange ad units with fellow developers, read more about all the goodies http://www.unity3d.com/5

Unity 5 is still in development but if you’re at GDC this week come to booth #1402 to get a hands on.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let’s go back to our 4.x folder for a second, we are still working on 4.x releases, the next one being 4.5 with a tonne of improvements. After that we have 4.6 which is solely dedicated to the Unity GUI, no, you’re not dreaming, I did just say that. Again if anyone is at GDC, stop by the booth to get a hands on with the new GUI.

As always keep the conversation within this thread and see you on the show floor.

How long will the pre-order upgrade price be $600 per license? Hoping I can wait and get it when I get home from GDC

Wow, Unity have done a cracking job with this one. *Wipes the tear away*

I think many people will be breakdancing on the floor with the 64-bit editor alone.

Will subscribing to 4.x now give me access to 5.x when it's released?

    @thedreamer

    From the FAQ:

The new GUI system will be in Unity 4.6, which will be released this Spring.

Spring is a vague term in some countries :p

Thanks Unity! BUT hmmmm whats the point of closing my thread:
    http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/234921-Unity-5-WebGL

I particularly wanted to focus on, and chat about WebGL not all the other Features of Unity 5, so why Force me into this thread...??? WebGL chat was the purpose of that thread, see no reason to shut it down... not cool at all

Will GI work in DX9 or only DX11 and up?
Also what about already developed shaders and plugins? There will be alot of changes "under the hood" so alot of them will just stop working?

Hey Graham, I have a question in regards to upgrading to Unity 5... I just recently upgraded my pro licence and now hearing about the next version is there something I could do? I do have my invoice from my recent purchase... would like to hear your response to this... thanks a bunch.

I will update but I'm not happy with MONO, since I and my partners we code in .js and MONO is not a good choice for .js developers, I would love to see Unitron back or as an option or some working workflow for notepad ++ or even downgrade to a working stable for .js mono version. :(

    MONO IS KILLING MY WORK.

Just a quick question, probably less important than others.

I keep hearing speedtree mentioned? Does Unity 5 have the ST SDK with it?

    •Unity is now 64-bit

just the editor or...? does this mean we finally get double precision etc?

    •New multithreaded job scheduler

is this what i think it is? hopefully not just for the editor, right? i think i just had a threadgasm.. ;)

    •SpeedTree Integration

    this is HUGE ;)

•Improved workflow efficiency by our new unified shader architecture

what exactly does that mean? the shader arch is changing again? better incorporation of compute shaders? what?

all of the rest of the features rock as well. would like to see some more info about the new GUI system.

one big disappointment: no new Mono? c'mon guys.. seriously? so we get all this cool stuff, but still have to use an archaic Mono/.NET to script it?

    Hi dear unity team.

Just wondering, as Neptune_Imaging, is there something we could do as recent buyers of version 4? Bought my pro 4 licence just now in February.

Well, it's mobile, desktop and console ready, and since Unity's main focus is multiplatform, i'm guessing it will most likelly work on DX9 and openGL.
Just a guess though. I have no idea :p

I'm amazed. I'm looking forward to see it in action!

To Unity Team: How the project migration from 4.x to 5 will look like?

    FAQ:
Owners of a Unity Pro 4.x perpetual license can pre-order Unity 5.0 for $600. If they also have Unity 4.x deployment add-ons, they can upgrade the add-ons to Unity 5.0, at $600 / add-on. This offer cannot be combined with any other current offers from Unity and expires when Unity 5.0 is officially released

When can we expect more technical details regarding WebGL or where do I find them if already published?

I'd like to know if WebGL will support PUN - Photon Unity Networking, and what issues might we face when publishing our current game projects to WebGL? I'd like to begin preparing my game project for WebGL, but I have no clue where to begin without further details... Thanks!

early access for webgl means, we get the tools before 5 comes out? this would be great, since this is the main feature i was hoping for. awesome work!!

I think this means Unity 5 will come with WebGL, but it will have some limitations as it my not be fully completed by the release of Unity 5... just like when they released Flash as Development Preview.

There's no new Mono, no. But there are shed-loads of changes internally which should reduce the amount of work the garbage collector has to do.

It means the editor is a 64-bit application. You can use whatever precision you like, as always. If you mean are they changing Vector3 to use double instead of float, no, that's unrelated to Unity being a 64-bit application. They could have done that in Unity 1.0 if they thought it was worthwhile.

also, curious as to how the licensing will work for SpeedTree. When i was working with Ping designing their fitting software, we saw you guys in Austin, tx when the editor was still Mac only, when we were looking for an engine to use. We ended up going with Trinigy, and got our SpeedTree RT lic thru them. it's older of course, so are there any more details you can provide about it?

the way it was worded, implied (at least to me) that the engine might've been updated as well. sidenote: most if not all scientific and real-world simulations would take advantage of doubles. it is worthwhile, at least to me, possibly others.

Correct. WebGL will be an early access add-on. The exact feature set for the 5.0 release is still being worked out, and some features will continue to be developed beyond 5.0.

    Amazing news.

    2 quick questions:

    1) Currently webplayer builds are easy to crack and steal code/assets (.net assembly). Is there any actions to improve security with new asm.js/WebGL build?

    2) About Unity Cloud, is there any chance to see webplayer support? Or a chance to see recently bought GameAds to support webplayer?

    Tnks

Nested Prefabs, Prefab Inheritance and an upgrade to Mono not making the cut is making this a hard sell for me.

64-bit Editor is nice, Better Profiling is Nice, upgrades to Mecanim are nice but this feels more like Unity 4.5 territory to me than a whole new version.

That's great for improving the performance of Unity calls, but it doesn't really do anything for our own game logic code. It's really unfortunate that more computationally-intensive games will be unable to feasibly use Unity.

Eventually something has to be done, either a new version of Mono or an alternative (eg, a C/C++ API). New engine features are wonderful, and I'm really looking forward to the new GUI, but we can't go on forever with just Mono 2.6.5. It's been four years now.
