How are thought level design puzzles ?

    Playing game such The Swapper, misadventures of winterbottom, braid and a lot of other brain teaser games, i always ask to myself how their scenarios are designed from the creator.
    The creator had spent much time for create every single level, testing that there are no design contradictions respect to the game rules, or there are some mathematical secrets that rent the level development faster, less complicated and in a certain sense "automatized" ?
    If yes, what kind of math is used? Discrete math? Graphs theory?
