    Playable preview [very WIP !]
    Want to see more ?

    Hello everybody!
We're working on a little game currently entitled Epic Broken Tale where you, the player, will take on the role of a lost fisherman. You won't be doing too much fishing, though (there may be some fishing!).

    The Team
    Creator/Designer - Thibault Calabrese (Lithium-sound.deviantart.com)
    Programmer - Austin Gregory
    Character Designer - Haizeel (http://haizeel.deviantart.com/)

    Story
The story is quite a simple one. After falling asleep on one of your fishing trips while fishing like fishermen do, you wake up on an unfamiliar beach next to your destroyed boat. The journey begins as you try to find your way home.

    Design
The art is greatly inspired by 90's games, including the pixelated graphics and low poly models. While the models are made of fewer polys and the textures are made of fewer pixels, we work hard to make it a beautiful world. Check out the screenshots below!

    Gameplay
The Gameplay will be familiar to those who enjoy games like Fable. Combat will be a fairly simple hack-n-slash system - swing a weapon, block with a shield. Like any other RPG, natives will need your help. Perhaps the quest is epic in scale, or perhaps something has been stamping around in Miss Ani's garden and it is up to you to make it stop! Oh, and lots of loot.

    World
The World is divided into maps, which range from 64m² to 2048m². As you adventure across the land, time will pass, you will cross deserts and mountains, venturing through forests and caves.

    People
Along your travels, you'll meet people. They're most likely strange people, but people nonetheless. Some of them may have the knowledge you're looking for, but since when are things free in RPGs? You will come across merchants from far away lands, but just how far away are their lands? Where are you?! Lots of mystery.

This is a pretty large project, especially for our first project together. The projects been going on for not even two months, with the programmer, Austin, coming on board just a month ago. Within this time we’ve been able to accomplish enough to assure that we’re capable of completing the game.

    Amazing so far!

The character is looking sweet, the style seems to be as perfectly executed and i really like it. I personally really like the concept. Keep it up, and keep me updated.

If you want to see more art, I've added a link "want to see more", it'll bring you to my deviantart page =)
I've also added the preview version of the first level, right under the first image.

the strange flickering will be fixed in the final version, because, in this level you'll not be able to see behind the house,
the camera will be fixed, like in the screenshot at the top of the page.

    Thank you =)

An other render of the knight, still WIP.

It has really nice atmosphere. I like the overall artstyle, well done. Keep up the work!

(Just a side-note: I propably think you know it yourself, but I just wanted to mention it, just in case. One can pass through the stones!)

I absolutely LOVE the game's art style, it just seems a shame to have such an original concept associated with a really insipid title. I'l be keeping an eye on this one.

The stone doesn't have a collider because in the final version of the level you can't go there =)

Thank you, don't worry the title is just a placeholder, this one is there only to define the story.

    Thank you =)

Thank you, i hope to kickstart this game before summer 2014.

Very cool man. I am curious about the textures. Are these just really small textures? Somewhere around 32 or 64 pixels and then stretched?

The game looks nice but the problem about these kind of games is this

Different views can change what you see

Also one more thing the title kinda looks like its written with poo..

Yep, they are very small, like in the old games =)
The hero have a 128*128 png file, the knight have a 64*64 png file.
Terain have a 256*256 texture, sky is only 16*16*3...

Please, take time to read the older post, i've already answered this...

"[...]because, in this level you'll not be able to see behind the house,
the camera will be fixed, like in the screenshot at the top of the page. "

"[...]don't worry the title is just a placeholder, this one is there only to define the story."

This style is just fantastic. The textures are spot on.

What's the poly count for the knight character? Also, I've sent you a PM. I hope you get a chance to get back to me!

The link isn't working. At first I thought you were just exclaiming "Miner !"

This "http://91.68.209.8/bmi/" is in front of your Deviantart URL which is the issue. If I remove that, I can see him just fine. I removed it for the quote.

Also, something about the belt's location is kind of throwing it off. It looks like the belt is a ways below his waist. I don't know, maybe it is just me.

    Yeah, it usually is.

I've teamed up with lithiumsound on this project as the programmer so we should have some functionality to showoff in the near future. I wouldn't expect anything too fancy, though.

I hope I can do the art style justice.

By the way, the latest model i made :
Rendered in blender, but it should look like this is the game engine.

...Longtime without updating the thread but, don't worry, we're still working on EBT.

    We now have :

    $full-game.png

An inventory system, with a hotbar, items stats, coins...
You can drag and drop items outside the inventory window to drop them
You can pick items with E key when they are dropped
A shop system with categories, prices and stats
A loot system with "random" number of objects and coins
    Weapons shields with different stats
You can equip the weapons and shields by draging them on the weapon slot
A simple combat system with damages based on stats (weapon, strenght, health, armor...) using left/right mouse button
A simple IA with pathfinding for NPC
A cool camera script with zoom in, zoom out...

    ...what else ?..

I may forgot some of the features, i'll add them later =)

    Little update :
The story is "almost" done, level 0 to 27 on a total of 70/80 levels are written.
I hope to finish the whole story before the end of the week.
After that, i'll start working on the level design.

I would like to point out the the icons are temporary and I got them from here:
    http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/37532.htm

Also, the player controller is pretty much complete. I'm just waiting on the finished animations to finish it up.

I'm using A* pathfinding for the AI.

The item bar (kind of like a hotbar) allows you to place and use consumable items such as food or potions.

The interaction in the game is based on where you're looking. A ray is cast from the camera, if it finds an interactive object, it checks how far from the player that object is. If its within range, it will prompt you with what to do. This works the same with looting items (look at the item you're picking up, press E) and opening chests or talking with an NPC.

The coins loot system is automatic, however. When you walk within a certain radius of a single coin, it will check for all coins within a larger radius and loot all of them at once. This feels pretty good. :)

Not much to say about the combat at the moment. Like lithium said, damaging enemies is based on player and enemy stats. When you attack, I check for enemies within a certain radius of the player, then I check to see what enemy's are in front of the player. After that, I can tune the selection down if needed. The radius depends on the weapons attack range.

I think we're trying to get a prototype ready for people some time in December so if you want to try some stuff out, it shouldn't be long!
