I just downloaded Unity 4.2.1 and installed it and once it finished I tried opening Unity but this window came up saying "Unity license has expired. For more information see online help at www.unity3d.com/unity/err/license and two buttons that say "Quit" and "Re-activate" but I never purchased a license and it will never let me get into the program.
    I am using windows 7

This is typical. Basically Unity is just dropping down to the free version. You can Re-activate the license to get the 30 day trial of the Pro version if you haven't already used it.

Just activate the Unity free, and you should be able to use Unity. So, in other words, choose the Re-activate option.
