    Hi everyone,

what would you think about a game with only ambient occlusion, mainly no textures, only simple colors with ambient occlusion.

I am thinking about a first person runner.

As long as the gameplay is fun, why not?

A simplified geometric style mixed with ambient occlusion can provide a great look for a game and has been used in the past so I don't see why not. Though normally a couple of complementary (i.e pastel) colours are also introduced in order to point out important features or to add some interest over having a predominance white/grey.

However I doubt it can be done without using textures for the AO, from experience i'd say ScreenSpace AO is just not up to the quality you'll need.

You could just lightmap it completely, and used coloured lights to set the mood and so on?

I like the idea of the very pure ultra simple minimalist style.. just plain white with quality lighting/radiosity.

    Unexplored aesthetics are always approved.

A long time ago, I had a game design document for a simple single player shooter that would have no textures like this.

Check out Anti-chamber (not sure if I've spelled it correctly), as it uses an aesthetic similar to what you've described.

As rab says, it really comes down to your gamelpay.

I think the untextured + ambient occlusion/global illumination look is called digital clay rendering. It's a beautiful way to show object volumes without the distracting noise made by color textures.

I'm also exploring minimalist aesthetics around that type (although with some texturing in my case), but as has been said above it will come down to your gameplay.

A simpler design can work well with ambient occlusion. Pocoyo does a better job of it than any game I've seen. They use a bit of color bleeding/radiosity too.
