Ok, I'm far from the first to ask for this, but since it just sucked hours of my time away, I'm gonna ask for it again. Basically, after upgrading to 4.1, something seems to require all Max assets to import again and again. Importing Max files directly never worked for me, but before it quietly failed, now it's crippling. Even tried installing Max 2013 trial, which in classic Autodesk fashion, crashes on startup. Anyway, we can't seem to stop them from loading, can't disable folders or files, so the only choice is to do the whole mirrored directory thing, which is just goofy.

While I applaud Unity devs for trying to get 3d files to load naively, for me, it just has never worked. Max files don't load at all, Modo files load wrong, so either way I have to export to FBX. Now, I wouldn't be surprised if none of the loading problems are Unity's fault, but the heavy reliance on them is, and seems very easy to fix therefore I'm frustrated when my time is sucked away by such things. A junior coder could fix my issues in less time than I've spent working around them, and I'm just one customer.

Allowing disabling of file types is a no-brainer, but it's also unfortunate that for a folder we can't just disable it's contents. There is seemingly metadata for folders, a checkbox for disabling contents would allow for reduced clutter in project views.
