Now any game using the player that i open comes up with the error:
Failed to update unity web player, please install manually
I have installed it manually more than 20 times now,
I have cleared the cache and the registry,
I have uninstalled it and re installed it several times also

    Hi @Kiean_Stigle

Please can you download and install the latest WebPlayer version from here: http://unity3d.com/webplayer and try and play the game again?

This should fix the issue for you.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Our latest version is 4.0.1f2, try uninstalling, clearing the browser cache, install latest again and retest.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I have created games in Unity Web Player (www.ball3d.com and www.ball2d.com).
And I can say, that many players have this problem. I even have this error on one PC in my house. Would be nice if someone from Unity Team could fix this, because we are losing players because of this :/ Looks like it's not possible to update the plugin. Even if you remove it and try to clear cache, even if you reinstall the whole web browser. I think it must be some weird bug in the Unity Plugin.

Since now I will send all players who have problems with Unity Plugin to this subforum. There are many many players who have problems with this plugin.

"Error lunching unity webplayer" - this errors is very common. They can reinstall the plugin many times and nothing is helping.

Maybe when players will describe their problems here, maybe then someone will be able to help them and if this is a bug in the plugin, maybe Unity Team will fix this. I have no idea.

This is my image, same as above - $PICS 5.png

When I start this game: Critical Strike, It asks to update my unity player, I update it and it says update failed, It gives me a link to update manually, I updated my unity web player manually hundreds of times and it still says Update failed, Update Manually. What more information you need on this topic?

Somebody please help or I leave playing unity games >( :-x

    Hi all,

Can you all post the log file contents when you get this error? We cannot repro and the log files might help us see what's going on.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I have a question regarding this, does the Unity Web Player always try to call "home" before it'll run the content?
The reason I ask is this: at work now, where my internet connection is through a proxy I always get the error message reported here, before (version 3.5?) I didn't so I wonder if something has changed?
And if so is there anyway around it?

@Gnatty Unity does phone home yes, to download runtimes. Sounds like you have a different issue (although the same error is used), do you know if this is specific to being behind a proxy?

Can you submit a bug report to us? or email support@unity3d.com

    Thanks,
    Chris

I was looking for the log file, and I have found the solution to the "failed to update" error.
I was not able to access the temp file, so I decided to delete the whole temp folder. Then I have run the game again, and this time the update succeed!

    Windows XP * C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
    Windows Vista/7 * C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\
    Windows Vista/7 + IE7 + UAC * C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\

That sounds very odd, you should be able to access your temp folders, sounds like you have some weird windows permissions setup, if you do, that can effect the behaviour of programs such as Unity WebPlayer which write to these folders. It's also odd that you can delete that whole folder but not access it.

Things that can cause the error:

download failed because of a connection failure
download failed because disk is full
download failed because no write permissions
decompression failed because of corrupted data
decompression failed because disk is full
decompression failed because no write permissions
moving to place failed because no write permissions

    Thanks,
    Chris

I have this problem on both of my systems (Win 7 64). Deleting the temp folder has no effect.

I tried installing the player with UnityWebPlayer.exe and UnityWebPlayerFull.exe, both have the same problem. I can't even open the web player settings. The problem occurs in all of my browser: Firefox, Chrome, IE.

    The logs have these information:
Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

    EDIT:

Found the solution for my problem. I'm using EFS (Encrypting File System) for some folders on my hard disk (most of the folders under "C:\Users\Username"). The problem was that "C:\Users\Username\AppData\LocalLow\Unity" was encrypted. For some reason that was causing problems. It didn't cause any problems with other software, yet.

@CreativeChris - thanks for your reply. After a bit of investigation (using Fiddler2) I found the content is indeed downloading, but it's going through our very annoying secure download process, which I why I think it's failing.
Thanks for your help though, getting it going at work wasn't that important, I was only trying to skive off. Heh heh.

@MariuszKowalczyk Can you file a bug report on that please and send me the case id?

That issue is completely different to this thread and belongs in a new thread.

    Thanks,
    Chris

My problem is similar, yet even less revealing as the logs are a bit different. See below:

    130311 15:17:24 ------------------------------------------------------------
    130311 15:17:24 Instance starting, version 4.0.1f2_9bb580cddf70, UNITY_WEB_ENABLE_AUTODOWNLOAD: 1, GetDisableAutoUpdates(): 0
    130311 15:17:24 Datafile http://battlestargalactica-548.ah.b...unity3d?__cv=341c9268c4644a85c02e21ae19cf9000
130311 15:17:25 Setting error display: 'Failed to update Unity Web Player', details: 'A newer version of Unity Web Player is required, but the auto-update failed.
    Failed to apply auto-update.
    Please install manually.
    ', link: 1

    130311 15:17:24 ------------------------------------------------------------
    130311 15:17:24 Manager starting, version 4.0.1f2_9bb580cddf70
130311 15:17:24 Requesting bundle 1 (3.x.x) update. Required revision is 3558000, installed revision is ffffffff

    $Capture1.JPG

Notice that in the Manager log, that the revision being requested is not anywhere near in line with the version of the starting version.
Also, notice in the screenshot of the Unity Web Player "manual install" page snippet, that the Unity Plugin Version is detected, but that the Unity Engine Version is not, indicating that the engine is never getting installed.

I also have an encrypted hard disk using CheckPoint Endpoint Security Full Disk Encryption. I'm not saying that this is the culpret, but it might be. I do not expect that the encryption software is the culpret since the driver that decrypts the files is loaded at boot and the disk is accessed natively without any EFS involved.

Nevertheless, numerous unistalls, cache clearing and reinstalls yeild the exact same behavior and the Unity software never completely installs.

Any assistance to get past this error will be appreciated.

I had this problem and it turns out it was because I had a custom tempory folder location
The TEMP and TMP environment variables were set to z:\temp

    Changing them back to
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp

    Resolved the problem.

I don't know if it will help anyone, but sometimes it helps to turn Download Manager off.

fist you download the .cab file from this link: http://webplayer.unity3d.com/download_webplayer-3.x/UnityWebPlayer.cab then exterthen download and open folder UnityWebPlayer\cac08d8a5e25d4cb\build\WindowsWebPlayerInstaller and run it and insall it then download UnityPlayer3.x.x-win32 and extracet it and copy all file and paste it in C:\Users\(pc nam)\AppData\LocalLow\Unity\WebPlayer and paste it in (loader, player, mono and also paste it in Unity\WebPlayer folder C:\Users\(pc nam)\AppData\LocalLow\Unity\WebPlayer then run game and injoye
also like a video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53hfRYbG-_I

    How i fixed it.

    Are you using IDM?

If yes, you should disable any IDM browser extensions

Or go to IDM configuration ->General TAB

Under "Capture downloads from the the following browsers" , deselect the browser you use to play your unity game.

I also get this problem when running the web player.
I've tried all the steps here and tested the player in IE 11, Chrome 32 and Firefox 26.
I do have encryption on some folders in Windows but not the Unity folders.
My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64, no idea why the player isn't working...

Just solved the problem, which was related to encryption. I just did not know which folder caused the issue.

Reading from here I could see that the webplayer gets installed at c:\Users\{you}\AppData\LocalLow\Unity\WebPlayer. Unencrypting this folder fixed the problem.

you know? i think that erase some kind of files is an universal way to solve that kind of problem ._. i had a problem like this before in another on-line game that is not from Unity and I did exactly the same. Erase the Files and Retrying after that.

Amazing to me that these problems with the Unity Web Player have been going on for so long.
I am also getting a Unity Web Player error:
"A newer version of the Unity Web Player is required, but the auto-update download failed.
    Was trying to download http://webplayer.unity3d.com//Channels/6a3071739c8e/UnityPlayer3.x.x-win32.zip"

I have tried all the solutions above and nothing has worked. I don't see anything in the log files worth mentioning. I don't have IDM installed and I'm not using any other download manager. I'm not using encrypted folders. I have enough free space. I've used CCleaner to clean the registry. Both Firefox and Chrome give me the error. Of course I have deleted the UnityWebPlayer folder and tried the manual installation of both the full version and the one on the Unity site:
    Version of your web player
    Unity Plugin version:
    4.5.0f

Nothing seems to fix this problem!
I can't do any testing on this computer and I really wish that Unity would fix the issue once and for all!
Is ANYBODY at Unity trying to fix this?!!!

What do you have in c:/Users/{you}/AppData/LocalLow/Unity/WebPlayer/player ?

Usually you'll have Release and Stable player channels. It looks like the plugin is trying to download a player, but that has failed, presumably because of internet connection issues.

Is anybody at Unity trying to fix this?!!! No, I don;t think anyone is attempting to log onto your computer to find out what is going wrong.

Obviously I'm wondering if anybody at Unity is working on fixing this issue for ALL users, since there appear to be so many people experiencing this problem. No, I didn't expect anyone to log onto my computer.
I'm using WinXPx64 and I found the following in the 'player' folder with the following path:
    Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Unity\WebPlayer\player\Stable3.x.x
    Data (folder)
    info.plist
    webplayer_win.dll
    wrap_oal.dll

The above files had a Date Modified of 5/26/2014
I did not see any files marked 'Release', just the 'Stable3.x.x' folder as above.
I have tried many times to update the player, so I doubt it is the internet connection on my end.

I have encountered this very same problem many times and none of the solutions above works. On some of my computers unity web player works just fine but on some it doesn't because "Failed To Update". It's not network issue since my old xp computer works just fine, but my windows 7 or linux (running wine) doesn't at all. Hey, couple of weeks ago I was able to run unity on my linux work laptop under wine here! Those all are connected to same network connection via same router (cable modem) and have exactly same configurations. There must be something else going on here.

According to Kixeye Vega Conflict forum posts, this problem is relatively common. Do you really think all computer users are able to solve this problem with instructions in this thread? I'll tell you. No. Most of the computer users can't even find their home folder.

I think solving usability issues of your software is your job, not end users'.

Windows 7 SP1. I tried all the methods mentioned above. Nothing worked. Eventually I just downloaded the older version of the offline installer (in my case it was Unity Web Player ver. 2.5.0). Unistalled the latest version and installed the older one. Now the game I play works perfectly!
