I had this situations: I got fixed it:
please disable any download manager Apps from your browsers by:
if you have a chrome browser: please follow these instructions:
GoTo: setting -> extensions and then disable IDM (internet download manager) or any other download manager you may have install.

The idea is let the browser it self download the Webplayer automatically with out any other download manger Apps.
I hope this will let you play again. let's have fun.

if you need help please contact me on facebook :

    Another info that might help:
At: http://unity3d.com/webplayer/setup in Webplayer Settings tab I have at bottom of player:
    Unity player version: 4.5.5.f1

But in Firefox Add-on list i have: Unity Player 4.6.1.51269

Having problems with game created in Unity 4.6.1 (can't play it on local computer where Unity is installed):
Failed to update Unity Web Player.
Unity Web Player update finished, but installed revision (4618001) is less than required revision (461a002). Please reinstall.

Tried on another computer (OSx 10.10.2) on my left side, with same result. Please reinstall. Reinstalled. Nothing. Same error.
Webplayer settings show Unity player version: 4.6.0f3
In Firefox Add-on list I have:
Unity Player version 4.6.1f1 but also
Unity Player version 4.6.0f3 (two plugins, both active)?

Deactivating older one and refresh game showing message: unity web player. install now!
4.6.1f1 is active but not recognized? After reinstall nothing happend, but in plugin list both players are "Never activate".
Manually activating 4.6.1f1 in plugin list didn't fix problem.

Tried on third computer (win7) on my right side. Everything is working just fine. Game is working.
Webplayer settings show Unity player version: 4.5.5f1 (but game is made in 4.6.1 with use of canvas with is introduced in 4.6?).
In Firefox Add-on list I have: Unity Player version 4.5.0.18735

    Technical data:
40Mbit connection, no firewall, no router restrictions, no antivirus...same problem here in office and at home (same Internet provider).

    With regards,
    Ivan

    Same problem as everyone here.

Graham Dunnett, I really hope you are not a member of Unity team answering a customer (timhays) in that way. Very unpleasent to hear something like that from a team member:

"Is anybody at Unity trying to fix this?!!! No, I don;t think anyone is attempting to log onto your computer to find out what is going wrong."

It´s a fact that there is some problem with the plugin or the way that it´s been installed. I read all posts hopping that in the end I would find the solution, but not.
I don´t want anyone to log in my computer to find the problem, I just want to install the plugin and it works.

I do work for Unity. I'm not part of the QA team, who go to great lengths to test the web player across many browsers and OSes. The software we ship passes our QA tests. If an end user has a problem with the software, then providing detailed steps (such as the exact OS and browser versions, anti-virus software, etc) will be necessary.

Does not appear to be a permissions issue; rather, it appears something in the UnityWebPlayer temp folder becomes corrupt. I deleted the folder and the problem is resolved, but all game data related to unity has been deleted resulting in my having to start over. This seems to need some investigating as this issue is happening to me at least once a week and this is a FRESH install of Windows 8.1 (meaning I completely reinstalled Windows - no reimage, no restore from backups, no restore or refresh ... I deleted my old partitions, formatted the disk and installed Windows 8.1 from the DVD.) I have since been reinstalling drivers, software etc.
I stated the above to make clear that I am not coming from a position of a corrupted Windows install, etc., so previous issues are not relevant.
You have asked for logs from the users, but do not provide details on how to gather/capture them. Please assume (not in my case) that most users would not know how to gather these for you and either provide instructions or perhaps a tool?
I apologize if any of this comes across in a negative way, it is not meant to. I merely wanted to provide some insight and to explain why many users are frustrated with the experience.
To any game devs viewing this: Can you please, please, please add some sort of save function? Either 'cloud' based or simply a file that you provide an import function for. This would certainly help alleviate the consternation around failures with Unity updates.

    Just got mine working. Yay!
    Solution: In Chrome
    1. Settings, +Show Advanced, Clear browsing data:
    2. tick Cache images and files Hosted App Data
    3. Clear browsing data (button)
    4. Retry.

Setup: Windows 8.1 64 bit new, McAfee, Chrome, Unity 4.6.2 (Editor), WebPlayer bundled. WebPlayer failed.

    Other things tried:
    • Tried uninstall + reinstall of WP => nope.
    • Tried Java SDK install fix => nope.
    • Unity 5 installed => nope.
    • The .cab fix. (didn't work but might have helped the clear data work? Haven't uninstalled so... ?)
    • Internet Explorer (you know I was desperate!!!) WebPlayer worked for me there!
    • Then did steps above. Hope that helps anyone :)

I also encounter this issue in my mac sarifi, i can't play the game because it's always alerts the error message "Failed to update the unity player", when i click the message details, it tells me that a new version is needed, the auto-update download is failed. Actually, i installed the newest version 5.3.5, .

download the unity web player from the unity website then open your web browser withe it is open and you see the error message open your Task Manager and locate this program (WebKit2WebProcess) on your task manager then double click on the unity web player to install it.
On the install process it will tell you than this program which is WebKit2WebProcess is using unity player and need to be closed.
then on your task manager just close the WebKit2WebProcess by clicking on it and pressing the End Task.
then either automatically the unity web player will be installed or you need to press next or something.
well after this I think it should be ok.
