Another Castle combines classic platforming gameplay with the randomness of a rouguelike. You play as Andy, a kid who's looking for a random item, whether it be a kick ass magical sword, a wizard hat, or royalty. To find the item you must run, jump, and fight your way through a randomly generated castle. When you beat the game, you sadly won't get the item, as it's always in another castle. Instead, the item is now unlocked and can be found in future playthroughs of the game.

Nice prototype: I love the end of game quotes, and the procedurally generated levels.

Thanks! I'm trying to make everything as random as possible, including the game over screen :)

Oh yeah, glorious chiptunes will be coming, although I'm holding off on making sounds for the prototype for a while to work on gameplay. SFXR is mucho awesome btw, should be in every indie dev's arsenal.

Very cool! The player controller felt pretty solid and I really liked the art. Keep it up.

I love this game, controls, style, and the clever use of 2.5d style layering, giving depth while retaining the 2D 'esk' feel

Looks nice! I tried the webplayer, but couldn't jump between a really high ladder to the next platform.

    Good work though.

Nice job man, I had fun playing your demo. I liked too your background style. The only thing that I thought that is a bit strange is that the flying eyeball is 3D while the other enemies are 2D :p

Thanks! Yea, figuring out what to make 2d versus 3d is going to be a bit tricky. This is compounded by the fact that making voxel animations requires a lot more time to make. I do want to make some epic 3d bosses though.

    Looks great!

One tiny, tiny, tiny suggestion. Some people might have trouble judging distances with the changing perspective of the floor. You should add an option to switch between your current camera and one that has a flat view from the side with the iso option. That way, people could take it or leave it, and it would take almost not effort at all on your part.

Thanks! Having an optional ortho camera makes a lot of sense, I'll probably put it in as an option when I implement a settings menu. My only concern at this point is that I want to have some hazards the move towards and away from the screen, which would be difficult to perceive without perspective.

Thanks! Looking forward to The Other Brothers!

    Thanks :D

Ok, just messed around with the camera, and the orthographic camera works pretty well while rendering the background with perspective

Love the look of this, reminds me of the Commodore Amiga days.

What are you using the draw the sprites? :)

Thanks! I use ex2d to render the sprites in Unity. I draw the sprites using either Pixen on my Mac, or Sprite Something on my iPad.

I think it looks really good with the orthographic camera. Stuff's easier to distinguish. The background with perspective is great, so definitely keep that ;)

Yes, yes it is. The only thing I wish it had is layers, but other than that it's one of the few iPad apps that I have that are useful for actually doing work.

Yea, definitely going do make it an option.

I was talking with some friends, and they really didn't like Andy's design, so I'm thinking of switching it to this one:

    Better? Worse? Thoughts?

i love how this game looks! reminds me of wonder boy 3!

i would keep the original char that you was using as it looks cool or maybe have it so you can choose between a few chars for variety.

I like the one in the bottom right corne with the green shirt. All the ones with glasses make the character `hidden`, that one is the only one that is `paying attention`.

I also like number 8, as well as 2. If you plan on doing character customization you could make the default character be number 8, then add options for accesories like glasses, a suit, or a beard.

I've just updated the prototype to version 0.06. This version adds a freeze ray, summon shark, space suit, pillars, and hovering enemies to the game. I also added in a redesigned andy. Here's a video showing it off:
