Dear community, developers, Unityheads, creatives, coders, lovers and fighters.

We are extremely excited about Unity 4 – both for what the Unity 4.0 release will bring, but also for all the other stuff that we have up our sleeves (the only part that's public of that is the new GUI system, but you can probably guess some of the other stuff if you try!)

However we realized that in that excitement we'd made a legwork mistake in how we priced our upgrades. You all told us in no uncertain terms that you weren't happy with it, so we decided to change it.

Simple as that? Not quite – it took some soul-searching and discussion over the weekend. And work: to change various parts of our online presence and sales processes, not to mention refunding the hundreds or thousands of those who'd already bought at the now-incorrect prices. But change them we did.

Everyone who's affected by this should have gotten an email already, but since this might be of interest to new customers (and because sometimes emails are lost in the aether) here's the details:

    * We are going back to a more standard 50% upgrade fee for our Pro products, so they're going to cost $750 to upgrade.

    * Our Unity iOS and Unity Android Basic licenses can be upgraded for just $125, so under 32% of the full price.

    * Additionally we're doing a 20% offer of all online upgrades until July 31st (yeah!)

    * For new Unity Pro purchases we are also throwing in a $200 voucher towards purchase of add-on licenses (the voucher remains valid for 12 months).

Pre-orders to Unity 4 also get you early access to the Unity 4 beta on a first-come first-serve basis, so if you want to see the goods (or start using it in production) you should consider preordering. Otherwise you'll of course get access soon enough anyway, namely when we launch Unity 4 properly!

Phew, that's a lot of detail... if you have any questions feel free to post them here or of course reach out to our sales team at http://unity3d.com/company/sales?type=sales :)

    Love.

    d.

Can somebody clarify whether buying a Unity Pro upgrade is also eligible for the $200 voucher?

@David: Great job at balancing it out and given the number of retweets an overproportional amount I am surely not the only one with this PoV.

Eligible? Of course yes, but you must hurry, the 200$ voucher and 20% discount (over your already reduced upgrade price which will remain at 50%) is valid till July 31!
PS: Once you get the voucher special, you'll have 12 months to spend it (which is great anyway).

I moaned in one post about the upgrade pricing, so I would just like to say how appreciative I am of this announcement. You have more than restored my faith and ensured that I will be sticking with Unity and will keep spending lots of money in the Asset Store :)

The world would be a better place if more humans organisations were so quick to listen and change.

    Wooooooo!

This shows the real commitment of Unity (us). I know they want to make money, but they always listen to their customers and most of all, they are not afraid to agree when they make mistakes and take quick measures to fix it.
I love Unity and their guys behind!

Ha... LOL... ok... so I got a special offering from the Unity sales team on saturday... and it was 10 Euros per license more expensive than the new online price (when deducting the 20% online reduction)...

well... I already paid this morning the offer I got... doesn't matter...

Happy that you revised the pricing. I'm sure this is much appreciated. I actually will jump onto the train and upgrade my iOs and Android licenses, too...

Ok... this is perhaps a bug in the store system:

Before upgrading my iOS and Android (basic) licenses from 3.x to 4.x, the iOs and Android pro license upgrade was stated at 745 Euros...

Now, after I have upgraded my iOS and Android licenses, the pricing is 835 Euros?!?

    Shouldn't it be 745 Euros - 75 Euros = 670 Euros?

That's awesome! Not that I've come to expect anything else from Unity in the past 4+ yrs :)

    Thank you David et al!

Quick question, is that upgrade pricing limited to July, or the permanent V4 upgrade price point with July adding the extra 20% pot sweetener?

    Cheers,

    Galen

When they open up pre-orders it comes in no time. Probably beta comes at the end of pre-order session in late july.

    An improvement but seriously...

Why not doing it right just from the beginning?

Why is it still the old unfriendly licence?

Why can't Unity just be more like Luxology in terms of treating their customers fair?

Even though I think I am part of the silent majority that is fine with pricing, we will look forward to taking advantage or the pricing adjustment. May this be a new coke moment for you ;)

Thank you! I feel like my concerns were heard, and I am grateful.

There are two ways to read the discount math. Please confirm I have the right interpretation. It's $1500 for Unity Pro, $1500 for iOS Pro, and $1500 for Android Pro. So, $4500 total. Upgrades are now a straight 50%, so $750+$750+$750 = $2250. But, until July 31st, it's 20% off the cost (-$450), so the upgrade is $1800. Is that right?

    Gigi.

You can go to the store and price out the upgrades yourself based on you existing licenses.

Ok, now the prices for Pro upgrades are reasonable again and the upgrades for the Basic licences are a really great deal! Thanks Unity.

However I have a problem with the store. I have Unity 3 Pro with Basic IOS / Android. If I try to upgrade only Android Basic to 4.0 the Pro upgrade will also be selected automatically. This makes sense for Android Pro / IOS Pro Upgrades, but not for the Basic licence which should work without Unity Pro. Please take a look into this matter. Thank you!

    David,

I am a new comer to Unity3D, with background programming in ActionScript 3.0. Tried calling your SF office, but no reply.

I am not clear about the differences between the two Flash player add-ons. Initially, I would like to use the free 3D engine version, and compile it for running online under the flash player.

Could you, or anyone else shed some lights on whether the free 3D engine version can do that, and what’s the difference between the Flash Player and Flash Player Pro.

    Thanks,

    Dan A

Next time you start doubting unity and so on, remember this legendary thread. I don't know which other company out there would listen so hard to it's user base.

    Impressed.

Now guys, don't abuse it :D

Rather suspect people will be impressed enough to add another license on.

I don't think we put any requirements to your PayPal account. AFAIK it just goes something like this:

    You: Store, WANT LICENSE!
    Store: Paypal, GIEF MONIES!
    Paypal: MKAY!

    Or:

    You: Store, WANT LICENSE!
    Store: Paypal, GIEF MONIES!
    Paypal: NOWAI!

I don't think it could hurt to just try?

5-6 hours ago I was checking out Shiva3D and UDK again as alternatives for the immediate future (I was honestly considering switching engines).

Then I went out for a few drinks and came back to see this.

    You win this round Unity.

Question re the $200 code - does it come through on a separate email? I completed the Unity Pro purchase, now waiting on the code to do my iOS Pro license purchase. Couldn't see any reference to the discount code anywhere though.

That was true for the last week (before the new upgrade prices)... Currently only the NEW Unity Pro license purchases will receive that voucher... Upgraders already receive their discount pre-applied to the prices....
