    I love when people ask what engine they should use on a specific engine's forums and expect an objective answer.

    Also, Unity is your best bet.

    For this kind of game i must say Wintermute is the best 2.5D game engine. You can mix 2D backgrounds with 3D characters (or 3D static meshes). They can also cast shadows (If you place custom geometry to receive shadows). It have a very nice scripting language (with a C-like syntax). The engine also have build-in interaction support (like inventory, conversation, dialogues, in-game cinematics, point and click out of the box, etc). I should say, if you are really tagging this kind of genre (2.5D), Wintermute is the way. But if you are looking for a more general purpose game engine, greater features, mufti-platform support, Unity is zillion times better.
    Though, I've developed a 2.5D game kit for a client last year, completely made with Unity and yes it is possible to make any kind of game with Unity. ;)

    Obviously the best solution for you is Straight up OpenGL with C++

    Nonsense. Z80 assembly language with 48KB RAM. If it was good enough for Ultimate Play The Game then it is good enough for sonckc2001.

    @sonckc2001: You're ten years old?

    To be fair, he did ask for a game engine. Neither OpenGL nor Z80 are game engines :p

    But seriously, @sonckc2001. If you are new and want to get into some serious game development, it doesnt get any easier (or better, in a lot of ways) than Unity.
