Even with all the research I've done, I still can't really find a good, simple and straightforward explanation of the differences between a vision document, a design document and a technical document for a game. I've seen examples where people create each one individually, where they roll all 3 into one document, and others where they only combine certain elements of each into a single document, and leave the rest for other documents. I know there's no "right way" to put together those documents, but there's at least got to be something like a list of essential dos and don'ts for things to include or leave out of each type of document.

Anyone have any advice, suggestions, template or examples of each that I could refer to to help get myself on track with putting those documents together for my own project, without tearing my hair out over what I should and shouldn't include in each?

Greetings guys,
I'm starting to learn how to write/create shaders and I decided to learn Cg.
I'm using the book "The Cg Tutorial" wich can be found in NVidia's website Developers Zone:

https://developer.nvidia.com/content...1-introduction

I have a doubt about the syntax, in the first example of the book there's a struct definition:

Quote:

			struct C2E1v_Output {
float4 position : POSITION;
float4 color : COLOR;
};

As far as I know Cg syntax is the same as C++ syntax, but I don't understand what means this

Quote:

			: POSITION;

The variable declared already has a type float4 and a name position, so what does this :POSITION stands for?

I've been experimenting with MakeHuman to Blender to Mecanim and I'm finally getting the workflow down. I was curious if anyone else has tackled this and if you want to exchange notes.

I've tried exporting each of the possible rigs and they all have some issues mapping to mecanim. The two best so far has been the GameRig and the SimpleRig. I've settled on the SimpleRig because it provides more detail on the face area and I'm in the process of trying to perfect the .HT file so you'll have a mappable and rigged toon just using the provided workflow.

Anyone else have experience with this? Or anything else they can add?

I have this cannon and I want to control its rotation on x axis moving the mouse up & down.
But since I can't do that I decide to post here.

I am actually using a script that control the movement (with rotation limits processed by clamp method) pressing up arrow and down arrow.

But I would like to add the mouse function too.

Which is the best way?

Please answer in C# and if possible be clearer as u can because I am a true beginner. :(

If can help, the script I am using to rotate with arrows and limit the rotation of the cannon is the follow:

Please Help - I have a project that runs fine in the editor. When I build and run, I get an error right way - before the resolution selection starting window.

The really strange part is that it only happens in this project. Other projects work fine. Also - the executable runs fine on other machines. Only this machine does it crash. I

I have restarted unity, restarted the computer, reimported the assets.

It's like this particular project is broken - and only on this machine....

Thnaks in advance for any advice/tips

Hi there,

I am trying to use Unity game engine to create an interactive environment that uses real world data.
I use real world bathymetry data gathered by my company, which I can import into Unity; I have no problem this, except that my areas are odd shapes. I convert to a square and have the excess data as zero water depth.

It would be nice to make the excess data become transparent. is this possible

See the attachment. I would like the blue area to become transparent

Many thanks

Quick video on getting Unity 4 working under Ubuntu 13.04. Though it should work just fine on any other distro. It's relatively easy once you fix the issue getting around the license issues. Hope somebody finds it useful if for some reason you want to work in Linux.

What doesn't work
Creating a project - So you will have to use the angry bots project and clean it out. Or create one in Windows/Mac and copy it over.
Asset store - This should be fixable. However I haven't tried fixing it yet.

Is there a way to get my games to render at retina quality in my browser on my retina macbook pro? Right now, it's just standard resolution and looks pretty bad. I'm not talking about texture resolution, I'm talking about edge resolution of 3D objects...they look very, very low rez on retina macbook pros.

With Flash/Stage3D/Away3D, I can set my content to render at hi resolution, so even though my game might be only 800 x 600, it's rendering objects and fonts at twice that size when run on a retina display, even though the browser still thinks it's only showing an 800 x 600 viewport.

See example. Note the difference in quality, even though both are at 800 x 600. How do I achieve retina quality with Unity?

Hello Unity community!

Few months ago I found that there is no proper MMO client and server available on asset store without to be attached to framework provider like uLink or Photon. In fact if you want to make your own lobby logic (based for example on ejabberd) you could find nothing to make game server fast.

So from there I start. Now I'm really close to publish my asset to store with full source code (not like uLink or Photon - you will get everything) .

Please try WebPlayer and Android client on my test server: 198.199.73.196

It's based on AngryBots example.

Now I'm testing load : So I have 16 players now..

Main features:
- Focused on MMO support (target is 100+ user in lacation server based on Unity)
- No RPC calls (it's really is bottle neck any MMO) "Data Model Objects" instead
- Based on Lidgren
- Best developer practice - Develop Server and Client in single scene inside Editor!!!
- You will build Client and Server from the same scene.

Please ask question!

Hiya,

I'm looking for a bit of help with the connecting an animation script to an fbx file.

My big problem is connecting the animation stored in the file to the script component itself and getting it playing. I believe I understand the logistics of coding it well enough but I haven't been able to find any good explanations on formatting the fbx on import and connecting it to the script itself. All I've had luck with is having the entire animation loop play automatically by checking Play Automatically in the component.

1) do I declare an Animation at the top and interact with that?

eg. animation.play();

If someone could point me in the right direction or provide a few answers I'd very much appreciate it.

I am trying to set up a shader which writes to the depthmask at a second pass (since I want the depth of the object written before it). However this seems to cause problems.
It seems as there is some fundamental drawing order of the passes, which I would like to alter if that is possible.
One can reproduce the scenario with the shader below, applying it to an object and duplicating that object. The Z sorting will not work right when overlapping the two objects.
is there any workaround for this? as I use lots of assetbundle.
it's not efficient if we have to rebuild all assetbundle just to use newer unity version.

Hi,
im looking for someone to create an Augmented Reality app. We need the app to recognise images on small cards, and then play an animation. We've got lots of characters, so there's a fair bit of animation to be done too.
The engine needs to reference a CMS and then play the anim.

If you're able to do this or have done similar work in the past contact me.

If you can assist with just the Engine then also get in contact...

Edit.
I just remebered, sendMessage. This function will support what I need to do. *i always for get about this function. Anyhow, I still am interested in learning base class creation and sub class management so, please, if you have the time and patience, please pass it on.
Cheers

///original message
Hi there,

I have a enemy manager, which manages Groups (of enemies). Groups, may have as many members (enemies) as needed. The manager, manages and interacts with these groups by instructing which group to run, and when to run it. This is true for the groups, in managing its number of enemies.

The reason I am writing is that I think this system, can be handled better than what I have. My set up, while working fine, is a bit sloppy in that, it has one major pain. The group manager needs to get the component of each enemy in its group. Fine, however, each enemy, may have a different script. As such, just using GetComponent(X) is not possible, since X could be X, Y or Z. So I have if enemy member type X, get Component X. This is now a system of arrays, bools and if's.

After digging around, I think that creating a base class, from which each enemy script is a subclass of, is the best route, however I am not very experienced in this, and am wondering if I can get some good old fashioned community help on the matter.

Is this, creating a base class best for this situation. If so, what is the best way to go about it?

Thanks,
Ren

I haven't submitted it as a bug since it may be wanted behavior, but...
if I destroy a terrain, the "splat alphamap" stays in memory. If I destroy several terrains, Unity crashes. Is there a way to destroy the alphamap, too?
It doesn't matter if I destroy the terrain via GameObject.Destroy() in playmode or just remove it from the scene in the editor. ..

Ok, I was building a new level in a FPS games I was creating so I placed a First Person controller down to see how it ran and what could be improved but when I hit the 'Play' button the controller was moving by itself in only one direction and I could only change direction by aiming where I wanted to go.

So, then I went to play Slendytubbies, a horror game built in Unity to see if this always occurred. Note: This game was not made by me and I was playing it in the browser. This problem still occurred however.

I then went to test out a bunch of other games that were developed in Unity and the problem occurred in all of them.

I don't have any external controller plugged in to my computer, just my keyboard and mouse.

Has anyone heard of this problem and does anyone know how to fix it?

Hi,

For one of my projects I use the "Bounds" class to store information about the position and the extends of an AABB.

I have no problem to create and calculate the Bounds by iterating over a bunch of objects and call "encapsulate" on the Bounds class. I get good values.

The problem is:

Whenever I load my project or whenever I switch scenes, the Bounds values get reset. They don't get saved when I save the scene.

Is there any way to get them stored? Or is this default behavior? The scripting documentation doesn't say anything about that.

Edit: Not even 5 minutes after I posted this, I found the solution:

NEVER FORGET TO MARK AN OBJECT DIRTY!

So target function (WaitAndPrint)'s yield return phrase seems be essential?

and like above yield return any meaningless parameter is just ok?

Other way to do? (execute specific function first and stop until it is done)

Thanks.

Hey there fellow Unity Users!

For the last 6 months, I have been working on a game called "Team Tower Defense".

Team Tower Defense is a standalone remake of the popular mod for Starcraft 2 called "Squad Tower Defense" (www.squadtd.com). We are aiming to create a highly addictive, competitive based Tower Defense while still remaining "casual" as far as NOT needing to constantly click all over the screen and constantly doing something.

Team TD will test your strategy in a medium paced, combat strategy game.

What makes Team Tower Defense different than other Tower Defense games?

In traditional Tower Defense games, you normally saw it in one of two flavors; A) The monsters walk a long a predetermined path, and you place your towers up on hills, or in predetermined spots to kill the enemies. B) You placed your towers in a area creating a "maze" that the enemies would then navigate through your towers.

Well, here comes the Squad TD way of doing things: You will place your "towers" which, are not towers at all. They are fighting units. At the start of each round, the enemies spawn, your units spawn, and they go head to head!

MMO Style Gameplay w/ Progression

The game will require an always on internet connection to play. There is NO offline modes. I will make this clear from the get go.. there will NOT BE ANY FORM OF OFFLINE MODE...EVER. The game will require you to log in to play.

The game will have a similar lobby / matchmaking setup to games like, SMITE, DOTA2, and League Of Legends.

Unlike some of those games, we want to reward players who put in their time into our game. Player progression will result in levels, and levels will make your builders stronger. Although it won't be a huge increase (5-10%), it will be noticeable, but not game breaking.

Okay, so they fight..but where does the "Team" come in to play in the title "Team Tower Defense"?

Team TD is focused completely around a team. In our traditional game modes of (2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5) you will have 2 teams. Each of the "lanes" of your team ultimately connect and lead to your teams Guardian. Your guardian is like..your castle. If it dies, your team loses.

If you leak(let enemies through), the enemies will then try to get to your guardian. If your other teammates do NOT leak (they killed all theirs), their remaining units will go to defend the guardian from any leaked units. The objective is to hold out longer than the other team.

Okay, can we fight the other team?

In a sense..Yes. You will be able to queue up units to be sent to the other team, ranging from weak units, to huge strong units. You will need to harvest oil which is used to purchase the units that are sent to the other team. Each time you send a unit, it adds to your income.

How much will it cost?

The game itself is free to play. However, you will be able to purchase unique builders with in game currency. You are not required to spend any real life money to purchase them, as you will gain in game currency upon just playing the game!

Why is this game free? How will you make money?!

This is the #1 concern with anybody that is looking to invest in the project. We are sure that includes you guys as well. You obviously don't want to spend your hard earned money into a game that doesn't have a profitable business plan setup, right? Right.

Although the game will not *require* ANYONE to spend any money to play the game to its fullest. Over the years, we have noticed that there are a great deal of people in the world who just like to "donate", or who want to get the newest stuff before others. These are the people that will keep us afloat. The necessary cost is the hosting of the servers. If we can cover that, we're golden.

The Inspiration

The inspiration was off of Squadron Tower Defense. I love the game, and if any of you happen to have Starcraft II, please check it out so you can fully understand the gameplay. It is in the Arcade, and at the top of the list.

Kids MatchPoint Challenge

This game is a simple match 2 game based primarily on our original game MatchPoint Challenge but with Kid friendly art and some nice music.

Easy, timed and Seek mode

Match App Store icons from the Kids, Family and Educational categories.

I would like to to give a big shout out to Chris Hildenbrand who did a lot of the art work - http://2dgameartforprogrammers.blogspot.ca/

I'm new to C# and my procedural programming insights are steering me wrong.

If I create a new player, my simple FollowCamera.cs script, attached to the main camera, works fine, PROVIDED I manually drag the game object "player" onto the "target" slot of the script. I built these from demo's and tutorials.

But what I need to do is instantiate a new player at run-time, when "drag and drop" is not available to the user.

How do I do the equivalent "drag and drop" in C#, assuming I just made a new Game Object called "localplayer"?

What does NOT work is something simple like:
FollowCamera.target = localplayer;

How should I do this?
Thank you!

I am wondering that whether there's a way to access Unity3D GameObject from an external dll file? For example, in my Unity3D scene, I have an object named 'Capsule', then I created a dll file such as the example:

In this dll file, I would like to modify the position of the Capsule without writing code (C#/JS) in Unity3D. Only drop some lines in dll, is it possible? for I would like to do something like in Unity3D:
1. i declare some:  public GameObject testobject;
2. then  testobject = GameObject.Find("Capsule");

How can I do this in DLL?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

i’m currently trying to connect to a ssl server (Java) via unity. When debugging on server side you can see, that the unity client is connecting to the ssl server. The server offers his public certificate to the unity client. The unity client answers “unknown server certificate”. The unity client doesn’t know the servers public certificate. So my question is how to import a root certificate into my unity client in a c# script?
I’m looking forward for your answer! I would be very happy, if you can help me!

Sincerely yours

I'm working on an endless runner type game of sorts. All the blocks that you have to dodge are procedurally generated.

I'm currently using the InvokeRepeating function to procedurally create the block collection. My blocks are contained withing an empty GameObject and contain one or more blocks to create essentially a row of hazards. I Instantiate them within a decent sized for loop to ensure that I have some space in between each block collection for some breathing room. The 20 block collections are randomized so that you get different hazards all the time.

I am running it on my iPhone 4s and so far so good, EXCEPT for one issue! The draw calls bump up from 11 to say 50-60 and it causes the runner game to lag or "burp" on me. I thought I would be saving processing power by Instantiating prefabs which may very well be the case. I could just be generating too many at once.

We have the Unity 4 free version so I can't do any profiling or extra stuff to help me out...

My questions to you:

Is InvokeRepeating the best for performance on something like this... I have it fire every X seconds depending on the difficulty of the level. Is it better to just keep it all within an Update function or FixedUpdate?

I destroy the barriers when I pass them. Should I generate the first 400 at the start and then as one row gets destroyed I tell the procedural manager to instantiate one at 401 and so on... I do keep a zAxis counter so I have that option available. My only hangup with that is I would like to have some blocks do tweening / movement at more difficult levels to make it harder on the player. If blocks are moving up and down or something then I would like it to be for a decent sized section and not every man for themselves.

is there any Player, Project or Build Settings that I should be aware of that help with this kind of optimization? I don't have static batching but I do use the dynamic one. That reduces draw calls a lot.

Is there dumb shader stuff or collision detection stuff that impacts processing? I think all my shaders are mobile->Unlit and collision detection is discrete continuous.

The game is pretty solid, I just need to work on optimizing at this point to ensure that it will run smoothly. One other thing to note, I want this game to be released on iOS, Android, PC and Macs so anything that can be done to impact them all would be sweet.

Thanks!

There are 3 scenes

Hello , im not a programer or whatever something to do to any develoment program for games.

I do have so sort of learning fast thing . i did work with archicad , build my home from that all by my self , created the project in only 3 weaks..

And with unity , i get it make 4 days , i did manage to build already a small and very RPG style map ,

So the thing is , i am tired of playing all kind of games already have some big expirience as a player in a lot of RPG style games.
And a few days ago i just stick with the idea of creating , if i could creat a game....

Thats how i found out unity , but i dont understend anything about well nothing?

I mean , start creating , a player , npcs , some other living things . that part of editing. i dont have that capacety for now. i do manage already to do one thing or other but.. .

I do have a really nice project for my RPG , frist is something really adctive , something new , today is not easy...
Well its a preally big thinking for a rpg , online btw.

Im here to ask 2 things:

Give me info or links to , find the tools that i need to start creating npc and things with life .

And or , if anyone u can make/work with me in the part of construting the game.

Then again , im just a person , with an idea , i will do it anyway , but i guess i will eat alot of foruns to undertend how to create a simple rabbit ^^

Sorry for my bad englis.
